Senior Michael Mitchell was tabbed ACC Wrestler of the Week after posting a perfect 3-0 record in dual match play at 165 pounds, including two wins in league action. The Blue Devils went 2-1 this past week posting victories over conference foes North Carolina and Maryland.
The Midwest City, Okla., native scored an 18-6 major decision victory over North Carolina's Aaron Holt on Tuesday, Feb. 3 to help the Blue Devils snap a 30-match losing streak to the Tar Heels, 21-13. Duke last defeated North Carolina during the 1972-73 season.
Over the weekend, Mitchell earned a 10-7 decision over Maryland's John Antonelli in the Blue Devils 25-9 win over the Terrapins in College Park. He concluded the weekend with a hard fought, 3-1 overtime victory over Chris Ressa of Rutgers.
Mitchell, who is tied for seventh at Duke with 85 career wins, improves his season record to 19-5, including a 2-0 mark in ACC matches. Duke will next travel to UNC-Greensboro for a Wednesday match before heading home to face Virginia on Saturday, February 14.
