LAS VEGAS, Nev. ? The Duke wrestling team gained a great deal of experience over the weekend, competing in the 24th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational. The Blue Devils registered 14.5 points to place 36th out of 52 teams in a tournament that featured eleven top-25 squads, including No. 2 Illinois, No. 3 Michigan, No. 11 Wisconsin, No. 13 Cornell and No. 14 Arizona State.
The Blue Devils posted ten wins in the tournament, highlighted by a 3-2 mark from sophomore Wes Kuser in the 149-pound weight class. Kuser recorded an upset victory over Missouri's Josh Wagner, pinning Wagner in 1:51. Kuser also posted wins over UC Davis' Jesse Padilla and Cal State Bakersfield's Anthony Baza.
Sophomore Turner Rooney turned in a 2-2 mark at 174 pounds for the Blue Devils. Rooney posted a 7-0 decision over Eastern Michigan's Josh Lewis and a 5-2 decision over South Dakota's Travis Gottschalk in the two-day tournament.
Duke also received a 2-2 mark from freshman Wade Van Sickle in the heavyweight division. Van Sickle won a 5-3 decision over Cal State Fullerton's Dan Ott and a 2-1 decision over North Idaho's Robby Shaw.
Duke's other three victories in the tournament came from freshman Michael Degli Obizzi at 133 pounds, junior Antwone Floyd at 141 pounds and freshman Addison Nuding at 157 pounds. Degli Obizzi registered a 21-7 major decision over Lassen College's Lester Brown in his second match of the tournament. Floyd also posted a major decision win, defeating Dana College's Jason Lozier, 13-5, in his first match of the weekend. Nuding's win came on a 5-4 decision over San Francisco State's Kirk Fitzpatrick.
The Blue Devils will next compete at the Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C., Dec. 29-30.
