BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Duke won nine of the 10 matches, including pins by Frank Cornely and Mark Thompson, to gain a 36-4 victory over in-state opponent Gardner-Webb. With the victory, Duke improved its dual-match record to 6-4.
The action started at 125 pounds as Kellan McKeon took a low-scoring 3-0 decision over Jon Neal. Duke's Bryan Gibson then defeated Josh Pniewski, snapping Pniewski's win streak at 10 matches with a 7-2 decision in the 133-pound matchup.
At 141 pounds, Wes Kuser took on Justin Lansley. Kuser scored a quick takedown for the 2-0 advantage, but Lansley fought loose for the escape and then earned a takedown of his own for the 3-2 lead. Freshman Kuser then reversed the senior for the 4-3 lead after one period. Lansley earned an escape in the second frame to knot the score at 4-4, but Kuser would again claim the slim 5-4 lead with an escape at the start of period three. Lansley regained the 6-5 edge just 16 seconds later with another takedown, but Kuser would eventually manage to break free for the escape and get the riding-time point for the 7-6 decision.
In the 149-pound matchup, Dan Shvartsman earned a takedown 1:04 into the action, but lost his momentum after that and fell victim to a 25-10 tech fall. Gardner-Webb was only credited with four team points because Elliott's final point came via the riding time bonus, and there were no back points awarded to Elliott during the match.
Duke regained momentum and pushed its lead out to 12-4 as Zach Weisberg took a 9-4 decision over Adam Glaser at 157.
Steve Smith and Levi Craig earned decisions for the Blue Devils at 165 and 174, spreading the lead to 18-4 in favor of Duke. Cornely and Thompson scored back-to-back pins at 184 and 197, giving Duke a 30-4 advantage. Venroy July took the 285-pound match via default for the final score of 36-4.
The Blue Devils return to action this Tuesday as they host Campbell and Duquesne.
