Blue Devil senior Frank Cornely will wrap up his collegiate career at this weekend's NCAA Wrestling Championships in St. Louis and he is looking to cap off his tenure at Duke with All-America honors. Cornely finds himself in a more favorable starting position than last year, when he drew the number-one overall seed and eventual champion, Greg Jones of West Virginia. Jones beat Cornely 22-7, forcing the Blue Devil into the consolation bracket early.
This year, Cornely has drawn C.B. Dollaway of Arizona State, the number-12 seed. Should Cornely win that match, he would likely face off against fifth-seeded Brian Glynn of Illinois in the second round. If both wrestlers make it that far, there is the potential for a rematch with Jones in the semifinals, which would occur Friday night.
Cornely gained valuable championship experience last year, his only previous NCAA appearance. After losing to Jones, he came back and beat Brad Christie of Hofstra and followed with a win over 10th-seeded Nick Catone of Rider, coming within two matches of placing in the top eight at 184 and earning All-America status.
The 2005 NCAA Championships take place in St. Louis from March 17-19. The first two rounds of both the championship and consolation brackets are on Thursday. The first session begins at 11 a.m.
