DURHAM,N.C. ? The 11th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers notched a goal in the 50th minute on Sunday to defeat seventh-ranked Duke, 1-0, in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) action at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils suffered their first loss of the year to fall to 7-1-1, 1-1 in the ACC, while Virginia improved to 7-2-1, 2-0 in league play.
Duke opened the first half in attack mode led by senior defender Carolyn Ford. Ford, a product of Bethesda, Md., took a header off a corner kick from junior Lauren Tippets that hit the crossbar in the 13th minute of the match and then had her second shot of the contest in the 23rd minute as she broke free on a free kick, but missed the shot right as Cavalier goalkeeper Christina de Vries challenged her in the box.
“I thought we did start off very well and did some nice things in the early half,” said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. “We were not dangerous as we needed to be. I know we possessed the ball well but when we got in the final third we were not as dangerous as we needed to be.”
Virginia finally connected on its first shot of the half with 11 minutes left and the Blue Devils finished the first stanza with a 4-2 advantage in shots and a score tied, 0-0.
The Blue Devils came out in the second half and had a corner kick in the first minute but Virginia took control of the match from then on. The Cavaliers got on the board at the 50:16 mark as Jess Rostedt broke free and was able to beat Duke goalkeeper Allison Lipsher after drawing the native of Honolulu, Hawaii out from in front of the net. Restedt's goal was her fifth of the season and was assisted by Nikki Krzysik and Noelle Keselica.
“In the second half, the whole game changed,” said Church. “In the first 10-12 minutes of the second half, they just outplayed us. They worked harder than we did, they won first and second balls and then got the goal. When you are playing a great, quality team like Virginia you have to play all of the time for 90 minutes. We had a little bit of a letdown and they punished us for it.”
Shortly after the Cavalier goal, Restedt got free again on the right side and sent a shot in towards the goal past Lipsher, but Duke defender Rachel-Rose Cohen picked up her second save of the season as she kicked the ball away at the last second.
“I was really close to getting a save the first time, but she [Restedt] just shot it a little harder for me to save it,” said Cohen. “I said to myself this time I am definitely going to go and get there so I put on the burners and ran a little bit faster.”
Duke had three scoring opportunities in the final 23 minutes of the match by Darby Kroyer and Christie McDonald, but all three sailed wide left. In the final nine minutes, the Blue Devils switched their formation to only three defenders but couldn't get any shots off due to the excellent defense from the Cavaliers.
“We are a very good team and this loss doesn't mean we are not a good team,” said Church. “It will be interesting to see how we respond in training and how we play at Boston College next week. We will learn from this game and it is still only September as there is a lot of soccer left.”
For the game, the Blue Devils were outshot for the first time this season, 8-6. Lipsher finished with one save on the afternoon, while de Vries had two for the Cavaliers.
“We played really hard as a team defensively and I am still proud of everyone for how well they played,” said Cohen. “Yes we lost, but we will learn from this.”
The Blue Devils will next travel to eighth-ranked Boston College on Sept. 30 at 4:00 p.m
NOTES: Duke allowed only its third goal all season long ... the Blue Devils had never trailed during the eight previous contests ... the loss for Duke breaks six-match win streak.
