Duke Head Coach Gail Goestenkors
Opening Comment
“I am proud of the team. I was really concerned coming off of our California trip because both the games there were 11 p.m. eastern time and then it took us all day to fly back and yesterday was a less than stellar practice so I was just worried about fatigue in playing this 11 a.m. game. I was really proud of the team.
“I thought it took us awhile to get going but once we hit our stride we had a nice inside-outside game going. Wake Forest doubled our posts and initially we didn't do a good job with the doubles but we adjusted in the second half and did a nice job. Overall I am happy with the team's performance.”
On Duke's slow start
“I think it was a combination of us and them, but they did a nice job. We were expecting them to play zone, most of the tapes we have seen were zone, so they came out in man. We didn't know they would double the post and they did a nice job with that. They always do a great job of running their sets. They set so many screens that it is hard to defend. Anytime you make a mistake switching off of screens I think they made us pay for it.”
On holding opponents to less than 30-percent shooting
“It looks impressive on paper but I guess I still see the flaws in our defense. I still feel like we can definitely improve on our defense. We have breakdowns that don't always lead to scores. Against good teams they will lead to scores or will lead to offensive rebounds because of our rotation.”
On which stat she is most happy to be leading the country in
“Assists ... I am most pleased with leading the nation in assists. We share the ball so well. We don't have one selfish player on the team and we create the best shot for our team.”
On depth of team
“It makes my job easier. We have a lot of depth and it is quality depth. The great thing about this team and it shows how unselfish we are just like the assists, but it shows with the minutes. People are not concerned with their minutes they are concerned with the results and us winning.”
On Jessica Foley playing well
“I think she is back to 100-percent. She was struggling earlier on because she wanted to be back right away. I told her to take the pressure off of herself and that we wanted her back for the ACC's so not to worry. Once she did that she took a lot of pressure off of herself and now she is really hitting her stride which is important.”
On offensive spark
“I think our defense sparked a lot of our offense. We got a few transition buckets and then we started attacking the basket instead of just passing around the wing. Once we started working our inside-outside game, we got some open looks and we got going there.”
On minutes played
“We had meetings at the end of the year (last year) and we all knew that our minutes would be down from the previous years because we have more players who will contribute more than they did in the past. I think that just makes us a better team and gives other people opportunities to show what they can do.”
Junior Lindsey Harding
On Duke's offensive production
“I don't feel like there is any pressure to try and score 100 points. It's great when you look up there, and you're playing a really good team, and you can score that many points. We just have so many people on the team that can score and once we're all hitting, we get hot.”
Wake Forest Head Coach Mike Petersen
Opening Statement
“I thought we competed pretty well in the first half, for most of the first half, about 15 minutes. I thought our defense was bothering them a little bit. We had issues rebounding the ball, obviously, and we had issues making open shots. When the game was still being contested, during the first half and maybe the start of the second half, we had a lot of pretty good looks, looks that I like, that we usually make, didn't go in. To beat a team like Duke, you've got to do everything pretty much perfect and if you miss open shots, it's going to give you a problem against a team like them. But I thought our kids did a good job and we had lots of open shots, we just didn't put them back, and then the rebounding in the first half was an issue.”
On the performance of his team
“I thought they competed. I think Alex Tchangoue is a competitor. She just went out there and guarded [Monique] Currie for pretty much the whole game and for the most part did a pretty good job on her. I think Corinne Groves is a competitor and she battled good in there. I think Diedre Naughton is a competitor. Yo[landa Lavender] struggled a little bit today, but I think she's a competitor. I think our freshmen are doing fine, but this isn't a ?Let's play the freshmen and see if we can get good for next year' deal. We're trying to win every game and the likelihood of winning in here's not great, but we came down here to win and we didn't get it done and it wasn't close to getting it done, so we're disappointed.”
On the key to competing against Duke
“Against Duke we're going to have to make jump shots. Our forays into the lane, it seemed like Chante Black blocked every one of them. I know she only had three, but it seemed like it was all of them. And so for us to beat a team like Duke, we're going to have to make some jump shots. We're not going to take the ball and ram it down their throat. It's not rocket science. We didn't have enough good looks. Duke's a very good defensive team and they did a great job of guarding us. Again, for us to come in here and win or come in here and compete, when we get open looks we need to make them.”
On Duke's depth
“I don't know that I've ever coach against anybody that, when they clear their bench, they still have three McDonald's All-Americans out there. That's pretty deep, I think.”
On what Wake Forest can take away from the game
“I think what we proved today is they're the best team in the country and we're not. We've got a lot of work to do and we're okay with that. We've got 13 league games to play and we're going to go win them.”
On where Duke stands
“They're very good. That's a great basketball team. Tennessee's got a great basketball team. From what I've watched this year on t.v. and what I've seen on tape, they're clearly the two best teams in the country. I'm sure when those two teams play it will be an epic, it will be a great game for everybody.”
