FLUSHING MEADOWS N.Y. - Six members of the Duke women's tennis team were in action at the USTA Billie Jean King NTC Women's College Tennis Invitational on Saturday, as three remain in singles main-draw competition and one doubles team remains in action.
In the Doubles A Flight, No. 1-seeded Kristin Cargill and Amanda Granson took down Carling Donovan and Angela Hendry of Columbia, 8-2, before falling to Luara Ganzer and Megan McGavock of South Carolina, 8-5. In the same flight, Tory Zawacki and Jennifer Zika fell to Alejandra Guerral and Daria Petrovic of N.C. State, 8-5.
The Doubles B Flight saw No. 1 seed Clelia Deltour and Parker Goyer defeat Ira Aleksova and Lauren Leo of St. John's, 8-1. Deltour and Goyer will meet Marlena Hall and Sydney Murray of Columbia on Sunday.
Singles action saw three of six Blue Devils grab top-five seeds. In the Singles A Flight, Granson saw Columbia's Hendry once again on the court, this time in singles play, as she defeated Hendry, 6-4, 6-2. Granson then fell to top-seeded Lena Litvak of Harvard, 6-4, 6-4.
In the same flight, Zawacki defeated Sarah Lederhandler of Yale, 6-1, 4-6 (8), before falling to third-seeded Yulia Rivelis of Penn in three sets (6-7 (3), 6-4, 10-4).
In the Singles B Flight, third-seeded Cargill defeated Sara Gilles-Madden of Army, 6-3, 6-0. Cargill will meet Sara Mansur of Brown on Sunday.
Zika was also in action in the Singles B Flight, but fell to Marisa Druss of Texas A&M in three sets, 0-6, 6-3, 10-6 in her first match of the day.
The Singles C Flight, saw two Blue Devils receive seedings as Deltour received a No. 1 seed and Goyer received a No. 5 seed. Deltour posted two wins on the day, defeating Katie Bramante of Syracuse (6-1, 6-1) and Jessica Preeg of Virginia (6-1, 6-0). The senior will meet Maria Anisimoa of Penn on Sunday.
Goyer also posted two victories on day one of the invitational, as she defeated Lillian Nguyen of Yale (6-1, 6-0) and Emily Ellis of Brown (6-1, 6-0). Goyer will meet third-seeded Caroline Hammond of Virginia on Sunday.
