Hola de Cancun!
Although my Spanish really should extend a lot further than that considering my first three semesters of college were spent becoming fluent in Espanol, that is the best I can do! We just got to Cancun yesterday, and with the exception of practice this morning, it feels as though the Duke Women's Basketball team is taking a quick break from reality. That won't last for long though seeing as how we have three really tough games coming up starting tomorrow night. But for the time being, we have definitely been taking advantage of the 80-degree weather and our location on the beach. You see, I have adamantly been preparing for Christmas since the day after Thanksgiving. Mariah Carey's Christmas CD and my red Christmas socks have both been thoroughly used for the past month (although I have washed my socks...at least twice!) However, the day before we left to come to Cancun I made a sharp, but easy, transition from a Christmas mindset to a Cancun mindset. Jimmy Buffet and my bathing suit have temporarily replaced Mariah and the red socks.
I spent the night at my sister and Ali's house because I do not trust myself at 4:45 in the morning and Joy apparently felt the same. Although, Em, I must admit I am a little upset you wouldn't let me jump in your bed with you. I mean we used to do it when we were 10, so what big of a difference can 10 years make??
Joy and I were shunned to the couch and futon and at 6:00 AM we were all trudging onto the bus to the airport. A few short hours later everyone was quickly shedding our various Duke hoodies, jackets, and sweatpants as we pulled up to the resort. The resort is pretty much like a miniature city, basketball court included. As we were checking in, I decided to take a look around. Who would have thought that the door with “ballroom” written on it would lead to a makeshift gym? That's right; the court is temporarily the dance floor of the ballroom. So if I don't hit a shot in the next three days, I am blaming it on my fear of hitting the chandeliers hanging from the ceiling!
Anyway, yesterday was our off day so after getting to the rooms, we went straight to the beach. Brittany, Ben (our manager), and I planned ahead of time and wore our bathing suits on the plane. Therefore we salvaged a whole extra two minutes on the beach than everyone else. For anyone who knows just how pale I am right now they will appreciate the fact that I am not wasting any minutes that I could be working on getting some color! We pretty much relaxed the whole day and mine was made perfect by dozing off in the hammock outside on our patio in the “summer” night breeze.
Today we had practice in the ballroom, I mean gym, and then had a day full of Cancun-ness. (New word made just for this trip!) We went parasailing, jet skiing, got in the pool, and then all collapsed in our rooms for a little while before the banquet tonight. Parasailing was by far one of the most incredible experiences I have ever had. I am normally pretty reserved when it comes to stuff like that, but I decided to do it this time. It was not too comforting though when the first thing my sister says to me is, “If we fall, we die.” Thanks Em. Other than that momentary feeling of fear, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
So all Cancun-ness aside, we have a game to get ready for tomorrow! Hope everyone is doing great, and Feliz Navidad from Mexico!
