CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Duke used a 22-10 run to cut a 17 point UNC lead to five with two minutes remaining but could not pull the comeback off as No. 1 Duke fell to No. 2 North Carolina 77-65 Saturday here at Carmichael Gynmasium.
North Carolina had the game's big lead at 57-40 with nine minutes remaining before Duke started to chip away at the lead. Wanisha Smith, Lindsey Harding, Alison Bales and Monique Currie scored all 22 points in the run and Currie scored the final four to cut the lead to 67-62.
Duke would scored just three more points, however, while the Tar Heels hit six free throws the remainder of the game for the victory.
Smith led Duke with 16 points and added five rebounds, two steals and two assists while Currie had 13 points and seven rebounds. Bales had 10 points and eight blocks to go with five rebounds. Harding scored seven points and had six assists and four steals for the Blue Devils.
Duke held UNC's Ivory Latta to just 5-of-17 from the field and nine turnovers but Erlana Larkins led the way scoring 16 points and grabbing 14 rebounds for North Carolina.
With the loss, Duke will hold the No. 2 seed at next week's ACC Tournament while the Tar Heels will be the No. 1 seed.
North Carolina also wins a point in the 2006 Carlyle Cup competition pushing its lead to 9-6 in the standings. The Carlyle Cup, an all-sports competition between Duke and North Carolina, is in its sixth year of existence and sponsored by Carlyle & Co., a Greensboro, N.C.-based jeweler.
