DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke wrestling team is up for the NWCA All-Academic Team award for highest team GPA. The team is comprised of the ten wrestlers who competed for the Blue Devils at the ACC Tournament and two alternates who competed in at least one match during the season.
Leading the way for the Blue Devils is an impressive freshman class that outranks the rest of the team in GPA despite facing an adjustment period to the demands of college. Michael Degli Obizzi, Duke's 133-pound starter throughout the year, currently holds a 3.57 GPA. Addison Nuding earned a 3.42 GPA during his first semester while starting at 157 pounds. Heavyweight starter Wade Van Sickle got off to a good start in his intended pre-law path with a history major, picking up a 3.42 GPA to date while Benjamin Wales compiled an outstanding 3.75 GPA despite a demanding pre-med course load.
The academic success extends up the ranks on the squad. Sophomore Kellan McKeon, who is pursuing an economics degree, has earned a 3.43 GPA while starting at 125 pounds. Junior Patrick Keenum is a double major in the Pratt School of Engineering who holds a 3.62 GPA. Junior Philip Wightman, who was Duke's 141-pound starter, is working towards a psychology degree and a markets and management certificate.
Redshirt freshman Daniel Fox, who started at 184 pounds, is a physics major with a 3.0 GPA. Redshirt freshman Aaron Glover started at 165 pounds for the Blue Devils and maintained a 3.3 GPA. Junior Daniel Shvartsman, who held down the 149-pound weight class, earned a 3.46 GPA while double majoring in economics and history with a minor in Russian. Duke's graduating captain and 174-pounder, Levi Craig, currently holds a 3.5 GPA in his history major.
The NWCA All-Academic Team will be announced within the coming weeks.
