DURHAM, N.C. ? Former Duke Blue Devil standout and two-time ACC Champion Frank Cornely continued his budding career as a freestyle wrestler with a strong performance at the US Senior Nationals held April 15-16 in Las Vegas, Nev. Representing the New York Athletic Club, Cornely went on a five-match winning streak to qualify for the second tournament, placing him among the top-16 wrestlers in his weight class for the United States.
On the first day of competition, Cornely turned in one of the more impressive string of matches in his career. After losing to eventual fourth-place finisher Travis Pascoe, Cornely faced a daunting task of needing to win five matches to qualify among the top-8 wrestlers for the second-day main tournament. He subsequently defeated five competitors while dropping only one period. Among his victories were a pin, a dominating 5-0, 5-1 win and a hard fought victory over Iowa State standout Jake Varner to qualify for the second tournament.
The second day did not go as well, as Cornely struggled with another tough draw, dropping two matches to top opponents. His performance, however, reestablished his position as a wrestler to be reckoned with on the national scene.
