DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke wrestling team finished second in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Academic Team award for highest team GPA with a cumulative mark of 3.327. The Blue Devils were edged by Brown University, who won the award for the second straight season.
“We set goals every year and among those goals is to meet or exceed the average Duke student GPA, which is a 3.2,” stated Duke Head Coach Clar Anderson. “I am very pleased to see that my starting lineup met and exceeded that GPA.”
The team was comprised of the ten wrestlers who competed for the Blue Devils at the ACC Tournament and two alternates who competed in at least one match during the season.
“It's even better to see that we reach these high marks while pursuing demanding majors, including engineering, biology and economics,” Anderson added. “Our guys not only put up good grades but also challenge themselves to get the most out of their Duke experience.”
The Duke wrestling program has graduated many NCAA Academic All-Americas throughout the years and John Sauer, a team captain, was a Rhodes Scholar in 1997. This year's graduating captain, Levi Craig, was a two-time Academic All-America who won an ACC Championship at 174 pounds in 2004.
Duke was joined by the University of Virginia as the only members of the ACC among the top-30 teams for the NWCA All-Academic Team award.
