Upcoming Event: Women's Basketball versus Countdown to Craziness on October 3, 2025 at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie
On the game as a whole:
“It was a great opportunity for us to work on putting two halves together. Defensively, I thought we did a good job pressuring the ball and being aggressive. They're an excellent team; they're averaging about 78 points per game, so it was nice to hold them to 56. It was also nice to see how we shared the ball as much as we did. 22 assists is very good and that is something that we need to build on as we move along. The rebounding dominance was also something that was very important to us and everyone sharing the ball and finding each other. It was much better than South Carolina.”
On areas that the team needs to work on:
“We're still working on our offensive rebounding aggressiveness. We'd like to do a little bit better than the 16 that we had tonight. Reducing turnovers is also very important to us, some of the one's that we made tonight were a little silly. It was good to go up against a press, it was good for us to get a sense of that. If we can take care of the basketball a bit better, rebound a little bit harder, and maintain the intensity on defense for 40 minutes then we should be in good shape.”
On the turnovers:
“This team is getting to know each other. We play a lot of people, all 12 played and contributed tonight. I definitely think that turnovers are part of the learning process. Getting to know each other, know how people work, finding each other in the right place at the right time are all part of the process.”
On the post play:
“We have some talented post players, who are very athletic. The key is for our guards to make sure that they get touches and then create off of that. As our post players do some good things around the basket, it opens up a tremendous amount on the perimeter. We just want to play from the inside out. All four are getting used to different combinations given who plays with who. That is going to take some time, just as it will take some time for our guards to learn how to play with each other.”
Abby Waner
On three-pointers, were you playing with a mentality to get more 3's:
“Not particularly; we just took what came to us. Our post players are really good at seeing if they get doubled, skipping it, and I was open a lot today. It wasn't anything in particular that we were looking for and we know we have our threes basically any time we want, so like Coach P said, it's really important for us to get the ball inside to our post first.”
On her seven rebounds:
“You're right; that is a goal of mine, to become a better rebounder for this team. I was unhappy with my efficiency the second half. I want to say almost all of those [rebounds] came in the first half, so I need to be able to stay consistent and rebound for an entire game, and I think part of that is going to come with getting in better shape.”
Jasmine Thomas
On her comfort growing with the team:
“I'm very comfortable because they're always giving me advice and making sure I don't worry about freshman mistakes that I may make. They just make me feel really comfortable and Coach P is always reassuring me to keep playing hard and doing what I can do, and everything else will come to me.”
On her mistakes bothering her:
“We're working on this next-play mentality which is really helpful because you can't worry about what happens in the past. You've just got to move on.”
On playing against Leah Metcalf:
“She's a great player, so you've got to just keep adjusting. One time I would try to pressure her a lot, and then the next time I'd have to adjust, so it was just constantly trying to adjust. She's a great player; you're not going to be able to stop her every time. Trying to stay at it and keep up with it was my challenge for today.”
