DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 11 Duke women's tennis team defeated 38th-ranked Indiana, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The Blue Devils improved to 1-1 on the season with the win and handed the Hoosiers (8-1) their first loss of the season.
Duke won the doubles point behind victories at the No. 1 and 2 positions. The Blue Devil duo of freshman Amanda Granson and senior Kristin Cargill finished first at the No. 3 spot, coming back from a 6-0 deficit to nearly take the match, but Indiana's Stephanie Heller and Brianna Williams came away with an 8-6 victory. The duo of senior Daniela Bercek and sophomore Melissa Mang then posted a 9-7 win at the No. 2 spot, and sophomore Jessi Robinson and freshman Elizabeth Plotkin combined for an 8-6 victory at No. 1 to clinch the point for the Blue Devils.
Mang got things started for Duke in singles competition, posting a 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 2 position to put the Blue Devils up 2-0. Bercek then increased Duke's lead to 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1, before Granson clinched the victory for the Blue Devils with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4.
Robinson posted a singles victory at the No. 6 slot, as she came back from a 4-0 deficit in the first set to take the set, 7-5. She went on to win the second set, 7-6, for the victory.
Plotkin bounced back from a 6-3 first-set loss to win the second set, 7-6, and take the tiebreaker, 10-6, for a victory at No. 3.
Senior Tory Zawacki competed for the Blue Devils at the No. 5 spot, falling to Cecile Perton, 7-6, 6-3.
Duke will take on unranked Yale on Sunday, February 11 at noon at the Sheffield Tennis Center.
