DURHAM, N.C. ? Duke (7-9, 0-5 ACC) will compete in the 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Championships on Saturday on the N.C. State campus at Reynolds Coliseum. The meet begins at 10 a.m. and is part of the 2007 Mat Jam which features both the ACC and Southern Conference Championships. Duke will send wrestlers into all ten weight classes.
The Blue Devils will look to rebound from a tough end to the season in which they lost their last six meets and ran their ACC meet losing streak to 11. The ACC losing streak dates back to Feb. 2005.
The Lineup
125: Junior Kellan McKeon will hit the mats for the Blue Devils at 125 pounds. The Chapel Hill, N.C. native is 12-17 overall this season and 1-4 in ACC matches. McKeon's tournament record is 5-8, and he has wrestled in every dual meet for Duke this season. His record in duals mirrors that of his team: 7-9.
133: Freshman Spencer Jasper will compete in his first ACC Tournament on Saturday. Jasper is 11-9 this year with two pins and an even 6-6 in tournaments. He won his only ACC match for a 1-0 mark.
141: Senior Philip Wightman will be competing in his last meet unless he can make a run to the NCAA Tournament. Wightman is 5-4 in 2006-07 and 1-0 in the ACC. He has a 0-2 record in tournaments and one fall. Wightman's career record is 24-24.
149: One of Duke's most solid wrestlers in senior Daniel Shvartsman will go to work at 149 pounds. Shvartsman is 12-7 this season and 3-2 in the ACC. He also has one pin and is 3-4 in tournaments. The senior will try to prolong his career by making the NCAA Tournament.
157: Sophomore Addison Nuding takes the 157 spot at the ACC's. Nuding is 11-9 this year and 0-3 in conference matches. He is 2-6 in tournaments and has two falls.
165: At 165 pounds, redshirt sophomore Aaron Glover has gone 18-12 with three pins. He has a 2-2 ACC record and a 7-8 tournament record. Glover finished fourth in last year's ACC Tournament.
174: The Blue Devils best hope for a title at a weight class most likely lies with redshirt freshman John Barone. He has been the most consistent wrestler for the Blue Devils this season, leading the team in wins with 21 and in falls with six. He is 10-5 in tournaments and 4-1 in ACC matchups.
184: Redshirt sophomore Dan Tulley will get the nod at 184 pounds. Tulley is 3-8 on the season overall with a 0-5 mark in tournaments. He went 1-0 in the ACC.
197: Senior Patrick Keenum will most likely be making his last appearance as a Blue Devil on Saturday unless he is able to make a run to the NCAA Tournament. Keenum is 6-15 in 2006-07 and holds matching 0-5 records in tournaments and in the ACC. His career record is 19-41.
HWT: At the heavyweight class, redshirt freshman Mike Tunick makes the start. Tunick holds a 7-16 overall mark this season and a 0-5 record in the ACC. He has three pins this season and is 3-6 in tournaments.
Last Year: Duke finished sixth out of the six ACC teams at last year's Championships in Lexington, Va. The Blue Devils had a total of 14 points, while North Carolina took home the title with 90.5 points.
Shvartsman Eyeing Ninth Place: Shvartsman is one win behind former Blue Devil Jake Cecere for ninth place on the all-time Duke wins list. Shvartsman currently ranks 10th with 84 career victories, and is four wins behind Michael Mitchell and Tommy Hoang in seventh place.
