Duke Coach Joanne P. McCallie
On Duke's defense:
"It was a physical game and an interesting game with many components to it. We did not defend as well as we would have liked."
On what Duke will take away from this game:
"We've got to learn from this experience, get better because of it, and move on."
On the energy it takes to play against Maryland:
"I was very proud of our team and they way they fought back from the deficits we had in this game. That was a positive thing. We kept our compose until the last six minutes when we enabled Maryland by fouling too much and playing too quickly on offense. However, our team showed great resolve, great spirit, and that is definitely a main component of playing a basketball game."
On the discrepancy between teams on shooting from the line:
"[Duke] had 16 free throws and Maryland had 42. That's a huge number and unbelievable. I wonder if that's a record or something. That kind of deficit cannot exist for us to be successful."
On Marissa Coleman's performance:
"Marissa is a great player and made terrific plays. She's an aggressive player who is confident in her shooting ability. We can't let a player of her caliber score 30 points in a game and hope to walk away successful."
Junior Guard Abby Waner
On Duke's defense:
"We put Maryland on the line 42 times and that should never happen. You're never going to win games if you do that. We aimed to keep our composure, which we did until the last five minutes of the game. We just have to be smarter with our defense. We need to play together as one, as a team, instead of fouling as much as we did."
On playing against Marissa Coleman:
"[Marissa] is one of my best friends. She is a good player and she is versatile. I felt like I knew every dribble she was going to take after playing her twenty-some times in my career, so it was a matter of just being able to be disciplined on defense. She played a great game."
On the rivalry between Maryland and Duke:
"I'd say it's a big rivalry and I think it's wonderful for women's basketball. It goes far back and this is a game that the country looks forward to every year. We're just glad we get to play them more than once."
On playing in the Comcast Center with Maryland fans
"We love playing in games like this. When the crowd is against you, it's exciting to make a shot or a run and silence the crowd for a while. We didn't silence them much in this game, unfortunately. The fans at Maryland are great though. They are enthusiastic, not exactly the sweethearts of the country, but I'd like to have them as my fans. I think they are a great sixth man for Maryland."
Senior Guard Wanisha Smith
On missing the free throw after Duke had tied the game at 68-68:
"I didn't think about the missed shot. As players we miss shots all of the time. I just knew I had to run and get back on defense ready to play hard."
Maryland Coach Brenda Frese
Opening statement:
"This was just a very special win for our team and for our program. I can't say enough for this team, for our seniors, for our fans, what it meant to be able to come out and play the way that we played today. I'm very proud of how we kept our composure. Duke's a great team. They showed their talent and their depth and what they're able to do. I thought we really kept our poise, especially in the second half. We went on a little dry spell there and weren't able to hit shots, but we found a way to be able to get stops on the defensive end and we found ways to make plays. We've talked all season long about working twice as hard to have twice as much fun and we definitely had a lot of fun tonight."
On junior Marissa Coleman's performance:
"Like we've said all along: Marissa is a match-up nightmare. I thought Duke had no answer for Marissa. She was really strong...which is something we've worked extremely hard on and Marissa's put the time in with her game. I thought she was phenomenal to watch."
On the game:
"I think you have to understand two things: Duke has been able to come in with a lot of veteran leadership in the past and it's kind of our turn now with the veteran leaders in our program. It's a process. I definitely thought that we approached this game no differently than we've approached any other game we've played all season. It was business as usual, it just happened to be that Duke was coming in to the building for this game."
