DURHAM, N.C.?Duke University wrestling head coach Clar Anderson recently announced that John Barone, Konrad Dudziak, Addison Nuding, Dan Tulley, and Ben Wales will serve as captains for the 2008-09 squad. The group includes three returning wrestlers who placed in the ACC Tournament during their careers.
Barone, who also served as a captain last season, returns after setting the single-season wins record in 2007-08. The junior from Shirley, N.Y., posted an overall record of 35-8 and captured two tournament titles at 184 pounds. He earned ACC Wrestler of the Week awards after an impressive performance at the Hoosier Duals that included a decision over the No. 8 wrestler in the nation. Barone also shared the team's Most Outstanding Athlete in 2007-08. For his career, he is 70-24 and ranks 10th in career win percentage at .745.
Dudziak returns to the Blue Devils after spending a year in search of a spot in the Olympics. He earned a spot in the Olympic Trials following strong performances in a few tournaments and won the University World Team Trials. Wrestling at heavyweight for Duke this season, Dudziak posted a 9-0 mark in tournaments in the fall of 2006 and was11-6 as a sophomore in 2005-06. He also led Duke with a team-best 6-2 mark against ACC foes in 2005-06, finishing third at the ACC Championships at 197 pounds. A dual citizen with the United States and Poland, Dudziak is 30-13 all-time at Duke.
One of Duke's top returners, Nuding will wrestle at 165 pounds this season for the Blue Devils. Nuding finished with a 29-10 record in 2007-08 and was 4-3 against ACC foes. He captured top honors at the Davidson Open and was fourth at the ACC Tournament. In his second year as a captain, the native of Reading, Pa., is 51-37 for his career.
Tulley enters the 2007-08 season as one of the Blue Devils' top returners at 197 pounds. The second-year captain and redshirt senior was 4-7 last season overall and 4-5 in dual matches. He is 24-34 during his career at Duke.
A redshirt junior, Wales had a breakout season in 2007-08. Compiling a 20-16 record at 174 pounds, he won the 174-pound division at the Citadel Open and posted a 10-6 record in dual matches for the year. Wales was named the ACC Wrestler of the Week following after registering a pin and another decision in dual meets with Virginia Tech and VMI. He is 29-27 in his three full seasons at Duke.
The Blue Devils open the 2008-09 season at the Citadel Open and Wolfpack Open on Nov. 8.
