ATHENS, Ga.?The Duke University women's tennis team posted five singles wins and a victory in doubles to wrap up play in the final day of the Bulldog Invitational hosted by University of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The tournament featured three days of round robin action with five other teams.
“It was a good overall weekend for us,” head coach Jamie Ashworth said. “This tournament showed us a couple of things we need to work on and that's one of the main reasons we played in this tournament. It was good for everyone to get back on the court.”
Grabbing the lone victory in doubles action today was the pair of Jessi Robinson and Tara Iyer who breezed by Georgia's duo of Naoko Ueshima and Cameron Ellis, 8-2. The No. 37-ranked duo of Ellah Nze and Reka Zsilinszka got edged out 9-7, while Mellisa Mang and Amanda Granson suffered an 8-0 setback to No. 23 Chelsey Gullickson and Yvette Hyndman.
Duke played six singles matches in the final day, putting together a 5-1 record. Tara Iyer and 17th-ranked Zsilinszka breezed past their competition from Mississippi, 6-0, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-2, respectively. Ranked 119th in the nation, Jessi Robinson outlasted Georgia's Adrienne Elsberry, 7-5, 7-5 for the win. Mang and 18th-ranked Nze rounded out the winners for the Blue Devils in singles with 6-4, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-4 triumphs over the Rebels, respectively.
“As a whole it was good to get out and play and we still have room to improve, which is a good thing,” Ashworth said. “We don't want to be playing our best tennis now.”
The Blue Devils will not compete in matches over the next two weeks. The next action for Duke comes in the ITA All-American Tournament in Pacific Palisades, Calif., starting on Sept. 27.
