ANN ARBOR, Mich.?Duke University senior Melissa Mang posted a pair of wins in the final day of the Michigan Invitational to finish with a 5-1 overall record for the tournament. The Blue Devils went 5-2 in the final day of competition at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Duke closed out the three-day event against No. 12 Vanderbilt in singles and No. 19 Michigan in doubles action. The Blue Devils took four of the five singles matches and split with the Wolverines in doubles.
Mang defeated a nationally-ranked opponent for the second time on the weekend, breezing past No. 80 Amanda Preeg. The native of Metairie, La. is now 8-5 in 2008-09 and sports a 2-0 mark against ranked opponents.
Sophomore Ellah Nze used a strong third set of play to get past No. 84 Keilly Ulery 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. The victory pushed her overall mark to 9-4 and 2-1 for the tournament. Also winning for the Blue Devils was sophomore Reka Zsilinszka and Jessi Robinson. Both had little trouble with the opposition, losing just a combined seven games.
Ranked 56th in the most recent poll, Zsilinszka dropped Heather Steinbauer 6-2, 6-2. Robinson dominated Hannah Blatt 6-2, 6-1 for her fifth win of 2008-09.
In doubles action it was the 20th-ranked duo of Amanda Granson and Mang capturing a big 9-7 victory over No. 51 Tania Mahtani and Chisako Sugiyama. The pair is now 5-5 this season and has won each of the past two matches.
Nze and Zsilinszka were back on the court together for the first time of the weekend and lost a heartbreaker, 9-8 (10-3).
The Blue Devils make their home debut on Jan. 23, hosting Old Dominion at 6 p.m., at the Ambler Tennis Center.
