DURHAM, N.C. - On Saturday October 24, both the men's and women's swimming and diving programs will travel to the University of Maryland's Campus Recreation Center Natatorium to open conference competition against Maryland and N.C. State.
Last season, Duke fared well against these ACC squads. The women defeated both Maryland (199-154) and N.C. State (216-137) in convincing fashion. The men swam to victory against Maryland (203-144), but were unable to handle the depth of N.C. State (151-201). At the end of the year, Duke, Maryland, and N.C. State each had middling conference records and the highest team finish by these schools at the ACC Championships was fifth.
The Maryland Terrapins open the 2009-10 season on October 23 against John Hopkins University. Last year, the men finished with an overall mark of 6-7 (0-4 ACC) and took eighth place at the ACC Championships. The women's team notched a record of 11-3 (2-2 ACC) and claimed fifth place at the conference meet. The Terrapins are under the direction of second-year head coach Sean Schimmel.
For the N.C. Wolfpack, this weekend's double-dual meet will be the team's first action of the season. Last year, the men finished just one slot above the Blue Devils with a fifth-place showing at the conference meet and a mark of 6-3 (3-3 ACC) on the season. The women scored 166 points at the conference championships for a ninth place tie with Georgia Tech and went 5-5 (2-3 ACC) on the year. The N.C. State Wolfpack is guided by 10th-year head coach Brooks Teal.
For a revitalized Duke program, a pair of conference wins for both the men and women would be an ideal starting point and set a positive tone for the remainder of the 2009-10 campaign. Already, Duke has jumped out to a fast start as the men and women each boast a 1-0 record having defeated UNC Wilmington to open the season. Led by a couple of distance swimmers, Ashley Twichell and Nathan French, and a corps of freshmen headlined by the performances of Ben Hwang, the Blue Devils edged the Seahawks at home.
Duke will return home to Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion on October 30 for a 6:00 p.m. matchup against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the Houston Cougars.
