Blue Devils Set to Face No. 2 Stanford Out West...
The seventh-ranked Duke women's basketball team (7-1) will face its second top-three team in the nation over the last 13 days as the Blue Devils will travel to Palo Alto, Calif., to face second-ranked Stanford (7-0) on Tuesday, Dec. 15 at 10:00 p.m. (ET). The Blue Devils and Cardinal will play at Maples Pavilion for the first time in the series history.
Duke is in the closing end of a very challenging part of its schedule facing second-ranked Stanford, third-ranked Ohio State, Southern California and undefeated James Madison. The Blue Devils had this past week off for exams and will play for the first time since Dec. 6 against USC. Duke will have eight full days off before playing against Stanford.
The Blue Devils are currently ranked No. 7 in the Associated Press and No. 10 in the ESPN/USA Today Division I Coaches Polls, while Stanford is listed No. 2 in both listings.
Noting Duke...
Duke is playing its second of two straight teams from the state of California on Tuesday (Southern California on Dec. 6) ... over the last two games, Karima Christmas is averaging 11.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 1.0 assists ... the Blue Devils will play their first true road game since a Nov. 15 loss at 16th-ranked Texas A&M ... so far this season, Duke is 1-1 on the road, 2-0 at neutral and 4-0 at home sites ... the Blue Devils hold a 302-100 points in the paint advantage on the season.
A Look At Stanford...
Stanford enters the game with a 7-0 record under Head Coach Tara VanDerveer, who is in her 31st year with the Cardinal. On the season, Stanford has been led by Nnemkadi Ogwumike (20.1 points, 8.7 rebounds), Kaya Pedersen (19.1 points, 8.6 rebounds), Jayne Appel (14.0 points, 9.1 rebounds) and Jeanette Pohlen (12.7 points, 4.4 assists).
The Cardinal is currently 4-0 at home this season.
The Series With Stanford...
Duke and Stanford will meet for the fourth time in school history on Tuesday and the first in Palo Alto, Calif. Last year, the Blue Devils registered a 56-52 win over the Cardinal in Durham, N.C..
The two previous meetings came in the Four in the Fall Tournament on Nov. 14, 1998 as Duke won 77-57. Stanford won the first meeting on Dec. 20, 1988 by a 91-76 ledger, which was played in Durham, N.C.
Duke Versus the Pac 10...
Duke owns an all-time record of 10-5 against teams from the Pac-10-- Arizona State (1-0), California (1-1), Southern California (4-0), Stanford (2-1), UCLA (2-1) and Washington (0-2). It marks the second straight year Duke will face two straight Pac 10 opponents -- Stanford and Southern California.
Since Coach P took over in 2007-08, Duke has notched a 4-0 record against Pac-10 teams (def. Arizona State, Stanford and Southern California twice).
Storylines/Other Blue Devil Notes...
• Blue Devil senior Bridgette Mitchell played on the USA Basketball Developmental Festival Blue Team along with Stanford's JJ Hones in 2005. The team went 5-0 and won the gold medal.
• Duke juniors Jasmine Thomas and Krystal Thomas each played on the USA Basketball U19 squad in 2007 along with Stanford's Kayla Pedersen. The team went 9-0 and won the gold medal in Bratislava, Slovakia.
• Over her 18 years as a head coach, Joanne P. McCallie owns a record of 3-0 all-time against Stanford. McCallie has notched victories against Stanford while the head coach at Maine, Michigan State and Duke. Coach P's Maine squad upset Stanford, 60-58, in the NCAA Tournament in 1999 and then her Michigan State squad downed Stanford 76-69 in the NCAA Tournament in 2005. Last year, Duke won 56-52 at home.
• Against teams from the Pact 10 Conference, Coach P owns an all-time record of 9-2 -- Arizona (1-0), Arizona State (1-0), Oregon (0-1), Southern California (2-0), Stanford (3-0), UCLA (2-0) and Washington (0-1).
• During Duke's six-game win streak, it is shooting 44.4 percent from the field and is averaging 71.8 points a game. Jasmine Thomas (18.3) is the only Blue Devil averaging double-digit scoring, but six other Duke players are averaging over five points a game. The Blue Devils are forcing 21.5 turnovers a game and holding opponents to 33.3 percent shooting in the win streak.
• Duke has won 33 straight home games in the month of December. The last loss came on Dec. 20, 1997 against UCLA, 93-83.
• Duke has registered 32 wins out of its last 33 games at home against non-conference foes. Over the last eight years, the Blue Devils have posted a 59-4 overall record against non-conference opponents in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The losses came against Tennessee (2), Connecticut and South Carolina.
• Of the 29 three-pointers Duke has hit on the season, junior Jasmine Thomas has hit 16 of those. A total of six Blue Devils have hit at least one three-pointer.
• Senior Bridgette Mitchell leads Duke with 21 offensive rebounds on the season (tied with Allison Vernerey). Over her four-year career, she has totaled more offensive rebounds than defensive rebounds each year. For her career, she owns 197 offensive boards and 160 defensive rebounds.
• Junior Krystal Thomas has moved into ninth place on Duke's all-time blocked shots list with 84. She is 12 shots shy of eighth place all-time on the Blue Devil charts.

Thomas Has Stellar Performance...
Junior Jasmine Thomas turned in one of the most dominating performances ever seen in Cameron Indoor Stadium against third-ranked Ohio State on Thursday, Dec. 3. Thomas scored a career-high 29 points, had two assists and two steals. She hit a career-high 10 field goals out of 20 attempts and nailed 2-of-4 from downtown.
Thomas backed that up in the next contest against Southern California with 28 points, three rebounds, three assists, three steals and hit a career-high 10-of-10 from the free throw line.
In two games against ranked opponents this season, Thomas has scored 29 and 26 points (Texas A&M). She is averaging 27.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals in those two contests.
So far on the year, Thomas is averaging 17.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 2.4 steals. In the ACC stats, she ranks fourth in scoring (17.8), fourth in assists (5.1), second in free throw percentage (85.7), tied for seventh in steals (2.4), tied for fourth in three-point field goals made (2.0) and fifth in assist/turnover ratio (1.6).
Thomas has scored double-figures in seven straight games and has 20+ points four times in 2009-10.
Coach P Versus the Top Five...
In three years at Duke, Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie has notched four victories against top-five ranked teams -- #3/3 Ohio State in 2009-10, #3/4 Stanford in 2008-09, while knocking off #4/3 Rutgers and #5/4 Maryland in 2007-08.
Last Year Versus Stanford...
Karima Christmas scored 10 of her career-high 25 points in the second half and chased down the critical rebound that led No. 8 Duke past No. 3 Stanford 56-52 on Dec. 16, 2008.
Chante Black added 14 points for the Blue Devils (7-1), who never trailed in the second half in snapping Stanford's six-game winning streak. Duke improved its non-conference record at Cameron Indoor Stadium to 53-4 over the past eight seasons.
Jayne Appel had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Stanford (7-2), while Jeanette Pohlen added 13 points, including a three-pointer from the right corner with 1:05 remaining that pulled the Cardinal within 54-52.
Black hit the front end of a 1-and-1 with 18.6 seconds left but missed her second attempt. Christmas outjumped the Cardinal's front line for the rebound and got it to Abby Waner, whose free throw made it a four-point game.
Duke outrebounded Stanford 40-39 despite the Cardinal having six players who are at least 6-foot-3 on the roster. The Blue Devils held the Cardinal to 38.5 percent shooting, snapping their three-game streak in which they made at least half their shots.
Noting the Schedule...
Duke is the only team in the nation who plays Connecticut, Stanford, Ohio State and North Carolina -- who were the top four teams in the nation in the preseason.
The Blue Devils are also the only team in the nation who plays all five members of the Associated Press Preseason All-America team -- Tina Charles (Connecticut), Maya Moore (Connecticut), Jantel Lavender (Ohio State), Jane Appel (Stanford) and Monica Wright (Virginia).
