Barone and Nuding Named to NWCA All-Academic Squad

DURHAM, N.C.?John Barone and Addison Nuding added another accolade to their list as they recently were named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division I All-Academic Team for their work on the mat and in the classroom. The Blue Devils as a team ranked fourth among Division I teams.
Barone and Nuding represented Duke on the 73-person squad selected by the NWCA. Duke was the lone ACC school to have two representatives on the team. Individually, wrestlers must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule ? and must have competed in at least 60 percent of said schedule. The other way to qualify for the All-Academic team is have a 3.0 cumulative and been an NCAA All-American.
The Blue Devils as a team compiled a 3.23 cumulative team grade point average for the year. They led all ACC schools and rank fourth overall among all Division I programs. Duke ranked first in both 2007 and 2008 and is the lone ACC school represented among the 30 programs.
For teams to be eligible for consideration, the team GPA is comprised of 12 student athletes, including the 10 wrestlers that were the entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier. If teams had less than 10 entries for their respective qualifier, they may fill those spots with wrestlers that competed in at least one varsity dual during the season.
Barone and Nuding both recently were selected to the All-Academic ACC Team. Barone took home the top honor in being named the 2008-09 ACC Wrestling Scholar Athlete of the Year.
A history major, Barone has been named to the All-ACC Academic Team each of his three years at Duke. He is also a member of the NWCA All-Academic Team and was recognized as the NWCA Academic Champion in 2007 and 2008. In addition to his academic accomplishments, the Shirley, N.Y., native also greatly excelled on the mat this past season, posting a 36-8 record in the 184-pound weight class and eclipsing the 100-win mark for his career. Barone led Duke's team in wins and in points scored while earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships.
Also selected to both the NWCA and ACC All-Academic teams multiple times, Nuding compiled a 14-9 overall record and 10-3 mark in dual matches after missing the early part of the year to injury. He closed out his outstanding career with a 67-46 record overall.
