CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The 18th-ranked Duke women's soccer team allowed two goals in the final two minutes of action on Thursday evening at Miami and went on to fall, 2-0, in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play in Coral Gables, Fla.
The Blue Devils have gotten off to a slow start in league play with a 0-3-1 record, while posting a 6-4-3 overall mark. Duke will return home after playing two straight contests in the state of Florida as the Blue Devils will host Clemson on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 2:00 p.m.
"We did so many right things, did so well in our preparation and did so many good things to get down in their area," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "Then when we get down there we fumbled things away and knocked a lot of balls right towards the goalkeeper. I am very proud of these kids and very proud to be their coach. They have done a lot of great things but we are not doing the final part, which is finishing."
In the first minute of the contest, freshman Laura Weinberg registered the first shot attempt of the match, but it was stopped by Miami keeper Vikki Alonzo. Duke went on to outshot the Hurricanes, 10-0, in the first half but couldn't get anything in the back of the net.
"We are playing some of the best soccer we have ever played in my 10 years," said Church. "We are creating more opportunities than we have ever had in the ACC, but we are hitting balls to the goalkeepers. Their goalkeeper made a couple of very, very nice saves, but a lot we hit right two her also."
The Hurricanes came out in the second half and took the first two shots of the stanza. Both teams went on to attempt seven shots each in the final period, but it was in the final two minutes where the match turned.
Miami scored the game-winner in the 88th minute as Brittany Steinbruch totaled her sixth goal of the season. The Hurricanes added another goal with one second remaining in the match off the leg of Tara Schwitter, who chipped it over Blue Devil goalkeeper Tara Campbell.
"They [Duke] prepared themselves, competed and we were the better team on the field, but it is unfortunate that we are doing so many good things but not getting results at this point," commented Church. "We will be ready to play on Sunday afternoon when Clemson comes in. We will be prepared and will just go out there and keep working at it. The goals have to go in - just have to go in. We could win the rest of our games -- there is no question about that. I believe in these kids and we can win out if we can execute that final part."
Campbell, who is a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, finished with three saves in goal for the Blue Devils. Alonzo notched eight saves in goal for Miami. For the match, Duke outshot the Hurricanes, 17-7.
The Blue Devils were led in shots by freshman Natasha Anasi with three, while Weinberg, senior Marybeth Kreger, freshman Mollie Pathman and junior Chelsea Canepa each added two shots.
Duke was shutout for the first time this season, but hasn't scored a goal of its own over the last two matches. The Blue Devils only tally in the last contest at Florida State was an own-goal by the Seminoles.
