SALEM, Va.-A selection of eight Duke University wrestlers opened their 2010-11 season at the third annual Hokie Open at the Salem Civic Center today. Redshirt sophomore Diego Bencomo posted the best record for the day, going 4-2 overall at 184 pounds.
Bencomo captured his opening bout of the day, defeating Michael Duckworth of Ohio University in a 12-6 decision. After dropping his next match, Bencomo came back to win three straight in the consolation bracket, including registering a fall in his first match. Andrew Saunders of UNC Greensboro ended Bencomo's day in the consolation round.
Senior Mike Bell posted a 3-2 record in his opening tournament of the season at 141 pounds. The native of Rockwall, Texas won three straight matches in the consolation round. He registered his first fall of the season, pinning Matt Wargo of Lynchburg in 1:39. In his next bout, Bell earned a major decision, 12-3, overall Tennessee-Chattanooga's Trevor Herron. After outlasting Duke teammate Riley Adamson, Bell fell to North Carolina's Rocco Wellek to finish his day.
Also competing at 141 pounds, Adamson went 4-2 for the day and posted a fall over Sam Embrugria of Newberry. The redshirt freshman started the day with a win in the championship bracket and captured three more in the consolation rounds before falling to Bell by a 6-5 decision.
Competing unattached, junior Peter Terrezza tallied a 3-2 overall record at 125 pounds. He opened the day with a commanding 12-6 decision against Old Dominion's Jerome Robinson and fell to Manuel Ramirez of UNC Greensboro to move down to the consolation bracket.
Terrezza added two more tough decisions, including one over ACC rival Gabriel Gomez of Virginia. In his final match of the day, the New Jersey native fell behind 5-0 after two periods. He rallied to make it 5-4, but could not quite overcome the early hole as Robert Gribschaw emerged with the narrow win.
Also wrestling for Duke were Christopher Mullen and Christopher Piccolella at 149 pounds, Willy Mello in the 174-pound bracket and Andrew Fulk at heavyweight. All four dropped his opening matches and were unable to come away with a victory.
The Blue Devils finished the day with a 14-14 record in the event.
Duke returns to the mats on Nov. 14 at the NC State Open.
