Bencomo and Klopp Advance to Day 2 at Cliff Keen Invitational

LAS VEGAS-The Duke University wrestling team completed the first day of competition at the 29th Annual Cliff Keen Invitational today at the Las Vegas Convention Center. A pair of Blue Devils advanced to the second day of competition in the consolation brackets.
Redshirt freshman Bret Klopp and redshirt sophomore Diego Bencomo both advanced to the second day of wrestling at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively. Wrestling commences at 11 a.m., EST on Saturday, Dec. 4 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Klopp pushed his team-best record to 17-3 overall on the year and added one more fall to give him a team-high 11 for the season. He opened the tournament with a hard-fought 3-1 decision over Indiana's Nick Avery. In the second-round match, the native of Lander, Wyo., went up against sixth-ranked Ben Bennett of Central Michigan. Klopp battled well, falling 16-0 in a technical fall. He quickly rebounded in the consolation and picked up his 11th pin of the season, beating Gene Choi in just 2:10. He will go up against No. 6 seed and 13th-ranked Luke Manuel of Purdue in his first match tomorrow.
Bencomo also posted a 2-1 mark for the day, winning a pair of consolation bouts. After falling in his opening duel, Bencomo came back to register consecutive wins. He posted a major decision, 12-3, over Zachary Johnson of San Francisco State and defeated Hunter Collins of Central Michigan, 11-5 to move into the third round of the consolation bracket. He will take on Ken Moenkedick of North Dakota State in his opening bout on Saturday.
The Blue Devils also got wins from Mike Bell at 141 pounds. He outlasted Trevor Johnson of North Dakota State, 14-7. Andrew Fulk captured his third win of the year, edging his foe in a 3-2 decision.
