No. 9 Clemson Edges Seventh-Ranked Blue Devils

CLEMSON, S.C.-Clemson sophomore Keri Wong outlasted Duke's Elizabeth Plotkin in three sets to help lead the ninth-ranked Tigers to a 4-3 victory over the No. 7 Blue Devils in women's tennis action this afternoon. The setback is the third straight for the Blue Devils, marking the first time since 2007 that Duke has lost three consecutive matches.

Duke (17-5, 5-3 ACC) started the day by taking the doubles point with wins at No. 3 and No. 2. Freshman Mary Clayton and sophomore Monica Gorny continued their stellar play as they cruised to an 8-3 victory from the second doubles spot. The 58th-ranked pair of Plotkin and junior Reka Zsilinszka clinched the single point with an 8-4 victory in the third spot.
Gorny and Clayton improve to 5-1 overall since joining forces just over two weeks ago, while Plotkin and Zsilinszka are 14-5 as a tandem.
Clemson (19-4, 7-2 ACC) answered quickly in singles, taking a 2-1 lead with victories on courts five and one before Zsilinszka evened the score by cruising to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ina Hadziselimovic. The win is her team-best 17th of the season and pushes her to 8-0 against league foes.
The Tigers regained the lead briefly at 3-2 as No. 76 Nelly Ciolkowski earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Amanda Granson in the fourth spot. Moments later, Clayton tied the score again at three after battling through a tough first set and breezed past Caroline Magnusson for the straight sets victory 7-6, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot.
Clayton joins Zsilinszka with 17 dual match victories on the year and is 6-2 in conference play.
Remaining on the court with the match tied at three were Plotkin and Wong in second singles. The Duke senior edged her Tiger opponent 7-6 in the first set before Wong rallied for a 6-3 win to force the decisive third set. In the third, the Tiger sophomore built an early lead and clinched the win for the home squad with a 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 victory.
The Blue Devils return to action on April 14 at Wake Forest. The match is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
