Blue Devils Blank Blackbirds in NCAA Tournament 1st Round

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-The Duke University women's tennis team opened the 2010 NCAA Tournament by cruising past Long Island University, 4-0, in the opening round at the Snyder Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Virginia. The 10th-seeded Blue Devils dropped just one game in the four decided matches against the Blackbirds.
"We just wanted to keep our intensity up today and get off to a really good start," senior Elizabeth Plotkin said. "We stayed really focused and didn't want to give them any reason to hope or give them any free points. We wanted to stay intense throughout the entire match."
Sporting an 18-1 record in NCAA Tournament first-round matches, the Blue Devils made quick work of the Blackbirds in doubles with matching 8-0 sweeps on courts one and three to gain the early 1-0 advantage.
The duo of junior Reka Zsilinszka and senior Elizabeth Plotkin were the first off the court, breezing past Stephanie Elie and Dara Lahens for its seventh consecutive doubles victory and 17th dual match win of the season. Ranked 32nd nationally, junior Ellah Nze and senior Amanda Granson were equally impressive as they moved to 13-10 overall in dual matches.
"We got off to a really good start and [assistant coach] Marc [Spicijaric] told us that all we had to keep doing was forcing them to make errors and not give them any free points," Plotkin said.
Duke closed out the match in singles, garnering victories on courts four, two and five. Granson captured her 19th dual match win of the season and 30th victory overall this year with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Taysha Blessington at the No. 4 spot.
Plotkin also posted a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 2 for her 19th dual match win this year. She is now 8-5 from the second spot and is 26-9 overall. Sophomore Monica Gorny clinched the contest for the Blue Devils as she dropped Elie 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 for her 16th dual match win.
Duke will take on either Princeton or Virginia in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on May 15 at 4 p.m., in Charlottesville, Va. Live statistics will be available at www.GoDuke.com.
