Clayton had an outstanding day for the Blue Devils as she upset the No. 2 and No. 3 seeded players. The second-year player defeated third-seeded Krista Damico of Texas 6-1, 6-4 to earn a spot in the semifinal round. In the semifinal, she defeated teammate and No. 2 seed Nadine Fahoum in a three-set thriller 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-1. She will take on Zoe De Bruycker of North Carolina in the final.
In section B action, second seed Zsilinszka cruised through two straight-set matches to garner a chance to take home the top spot. The native of Fayetteville, N.C., dropped just seven games on the day and will take on No. 1 seed Aeriel Ellis.
Nze wrapped up completion in section C with straight-set victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals. She lost just six games against Tiffany Welcher with a 6-2, 6-4 win and outlasted Maggie Mello 7-6 (8), 6-1 to move into the championship match against top-seeded Kristi Boxx of Mississippi.
In doubles action, the duo of Clayton and Nze won the consolation third-place match, beating a pair from North Carolina 8-5. Elizabeth Plotkin and Fahoum also won the consolation third-place contest as they also defeated a Tar Heel duo, 8-6.
The championship matches will take place tomorrow, Sept. 19, at 9 a.m., at the Cary Tennis Center.
