CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - After inclement weather pushed the Fab-4 Invitational indoors, the Duke women's tennis team played day two of the tournament at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the University of North Carolina campus.
In singles play, the Blue Devils started the day with some great victories. In the blue bracket, sophomore Hanna Mar scored arguably the day's biggest upset in defeating top-seeded Aeriel Ellis from the University of Texas, 6-3, 6-2. Ellis was ranked No. 14 nationally in the ITA's preseason singles poll. Mar then fell to Miami's Gabriela Mejia 3-6, 2-6 in the semifinals. Mar will take on North Carolina's Carolina Price in the third place match, tomorrow.
On the consolation side of the blue bracket, senior Monica Gorny fell to UNC's Haley Hemm, 0-6, 4-6. Gorny then dropped a match in the 13th place bracket to Texas A&M's Lauren Santacroce 2-6, 5-7. Gorny finished in 15th place in the blue bracket.
In the black bracket, freshman Ester Goldfeld upended Purdue's Mara Schmidt 7-5, 6-1, but freshman Annie Mulholland lost a hard-fought quarterfinal match to Illinois' Melissa Kopinski 6-7 (4), 3-6, followed by another loss to Virginia's Ajla Tomljanovic (2-6, 5-7) in the fifth place bracket. Goldfeld then lost 1-6, 6-3, 3-6 to Mississippi's Kristi Boxx in the semifinals. Goldfeld will face Illinois' Melissa Kopinski in the third place match, while Mulholland will take on North Carolina's Jennifer Stone in the seventh place match on Sunday.
In the white bracket, junior Mary Clayton notched a tight 7-6 (3), 7-5 quarterfinal win over William & Mary's Jeltje Loomans, while sophomore Rachel Kahan cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Alabama's Courtney McLane. The semifinals brought greater challenges to the two Blue Devils, as Kahan fell 2-6, 4-6 to Miami's Anna Bartenstein and Clayton dropped a 2-6, 2-6 decision to top-seeded Nazari Urbina from Texas A&M. Clayton and Kahan are slated to meet in Sunday's third place match.
Due to a constraint with court availability on Saturday, doubles matches have been moved to 8:30 a.m., on Sunday. Singles finals and consolation matches will resume once the doubles matches have concluded. If weather permits, all matches will be played at the Cary Tennis Park. If inclement weather forces the matches indoors, matches will be played indoors at Duke.
