DURHAM, N.C. – The Blue Devils will be celebrating 40 years of Women's Varsity Athletics at Duke University in 2011-12. The Duke Department of Athletics will pay tribute to the women whose pioneering efforts laid the foundation for athletics to become an integral part of a woman's experience at Duke.
Duke Athletics is collaborating with the Duke Alumni Association, in conjunction with the “Winning Women: Advocates, Educators, Athletes” weekend to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Duke Women's Athletics, the merging of the Woman's College with Trinity College and key milestones marking transitions for women in the life of the University.
The weekend will begin on Thursday, February 23, 2012, with a welcome reception for all alumnae. On Friday, Feb. 24, current Duke women's sport programs will host reunions with former women's athletes. Following the reunions, the Blue Devil women's basketball team will take on Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponent Miami in Cameron Indoor Stadium at 7:00 p.m., a rematch of last year's ACC regular season co-champions. The weekend also consists of several other events including a Blue Devil women's tennis match against VCU at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, Feb. 25 and panel discussions featuring some of Duke's most notable alumnae. The weekend is highlighted on Saturday, Feb. 25 evening with a gala for all attendees.
This will be a great reunion for all former and current female student-athletes and a chance to remember all of the special memories they shared together at Duke. Please mark your calendar now for the Celebrating 40 Years of Women's Athletics at Duke weekend, February 23-26, 2012.
