MECHANICSVILLE, Va. – The Duke men's cross country team finished runner-up of 16 teams at the Richmond Invitational held at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, Virginia, Friday morning.
Arthur Graham paced the Blue Devils with a sixth-place showing, covering the 8k course in 25:01.7. The Duke women also competed with only four runners racing, resulting in no team score. Junior
Ella Johns led the women's group with a 6k time of 21:27.0.
All six of the Duke men crossed the line in the top 26 with the trio of
 Graham, Griffin Kushen and
Isaac Abbott finishing sixth, seventh and ninth, respectively.
Recapping the Men's 8k
- All six of Duke's runners finished within 50 seconds of each other. Graham, Duke's top finisher, was steady for the Blue Devils over the 8,000 meters. In 11th place after the initial 1k, the Naperville, Illinois, native moved up to seventh over the next 1,000 and finished strong to take sixth.
- Participating in his first collegiate race, Kushen was next across the line in seventh with a time of 25:11.4. Moving into as high as second place at the halfway point, Kushen dropped back a few spots in the final 1k before holding off the eighth-place finisher by two seconds.
- Abbott turned in a solid rookie performance for the Blue Devils with a time of 25:14. The freshman out of Carmichael, California, ran the final 1k in 3:03.9 to earn his top-10 finish. Sitting in 14th at the 5k mark, Abbott finished strong, climbing five places in the final 3,000 meters.
- Dawson Reeves led the race after 3k en route to a 13th-place showing and time of 25:25.0. Jonah Hanikeri and Cruz Brown, also running their first cross country races as Blue Devils, rounded out the Duke lineup in 24th and 26th, respectively. Hanikeri touched the tape in 25:48.1 and Brown finished in 25:51.4.
Duke Women in the 6k
- Johns registered a solid performance in her second race of the season. Running at the front of the pack at the 2k mark, she held off a late push by an Elon runner to take seventh overall.
- In her second meet as a Blue Devil, Ebba Cronholm started strong at the front en route to 12th place in 22:17.7. Caroline Hood also got off the line well and was next across the line at 22:17.7 for 14th place. Lindsay Hausman completed the Duke contingent in 36th with a time of 22:58.6. Hausman finished well, going from 42nd to 36th place in the final 1,000 meters.
