FLUSHING, N.Y. – Duke's 27th-ranked Beatrice Capra continued her strong play Saturday at the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. The third seed in the tournament, Capra advanced to the final of the singles consolation bracket after defeating Columbia's Kanika Vaidya, 6-0, 6-1, and Georgia's No. 3 Lauren Herring, 6-4, 6-2, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
Capra rebounded from a first round loss in spectacular fashion, dropping just two games in four sets leading up to the semifinal match. The Ellicott City, Md., native defeated Pepperdine's 29th-ranked Lorraine Guillermo, 6-0, 6-1, Friday to open her singles consolation bracket play.
After upending Vaidya, Capra faced Herring in the consolation bracket semifinal round. Herring reached the semifinal after defeating Vanderbilt's Georgina Sllyn, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0. Capra jumped out to an early 4-2 lead over Herring in the first set, before dropping a game. Capra responded and won the first set, 6-3. Herring and Capra exchanged games early in the second set before Capra stretched a 3-2 advantage into a 6-2 set that punched her ticket to the consolation bracket final.
Capra competes in the consolation bracket final Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Live results are available here.
