DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke University wrestling team will get to soak up a little bit of the holiday spirit in New York City at the 2014 Grapple at the Garden in December. MSG Sports announced today that Duke wrestling is set to be one of an unprecedented 24 college and university wrestling programs to participate in the third annual Grapple at the Garden Presented by Suplay.com. The college wrestling dual meet event takes place Sunday, December 21 at Madison Square Garden.
Tickets, priced at $20.00, $35.00 and $55.00, are currently on sale and can be purchased online at www.thegarden.com, all Ticketmaster locations and the Madison Square Garden box office.
Duke is scheduled to take on Northern Iowa, George Mason and Maryland in the event. Action begins for the Blue Devils at 8 a.m., against the UNI Panthers and ends at 3 p.m., versus former ACC foe Maryland at 3 p.m.
The Blue Devils return four NCAA qualifiers to the team in 2014-15, including 2014 All-American Conner Hartmann. Immanuel Kerr-Brown and Brandon Gambucci are the veteran leaders of the squad as redshirt seniors, while Hough comes back after missing last season to injury.
In addition to the returning group, Lanham and the Blue Devils welcome nine freshmen to the wrestling room. The group includes a pair of brothers and wrestlers from seven different states.
Duke, one week into official practices, officially hits the mats Nov. 9 at the Hokie Open. The Blue Devils open their home dual schedule Nov. 22 against Nebraska.
Grapple at the Garden Presented by Suplay.com will also feature middle school and elementary school championships, produced in association with the Metropolitan Wrestling Association. Valid tournament registration includes select tickets to all Grapple at the Garden festivities. All competitors must have a current USA Wrestling card.
The full day of wrestling on December 21 will feature three collegiate sessions with the first starting at 8:00 a.m. with Northern Iowa v. Duke, Stony Brook v. Montclair State, Mount Saint Vincent v. Wheeling Jesuit, LIU Post v. Minn. St. Moorhead, So. Maine v. Stevens and SUNY Sullivan v. Middlesex CC. Session two begins at 10:00 a.m. and will include Northern Iowa vs. Drexel, Edinboro vs. Cornell, Rutgers vs. Army, Maryland vs. Hofstra, Lehigh vs. Princeton, Duke vs. George Mason and Davidson vs. Bucknell. Session starts at noon and will showcase Drexel vs. George Mason, Northern Iowa vs. Cornell, Maryland vs. Duke, Army vs. Princeton, Lehigh vs. Edinboro, Hofstra vs. Bucknell and Davidson vs. Rutgers.
