GoDuke.com caught up with redshirt senior
Marcus Cain after one full week of wrestling practice in the books. Check out what the veteran 149-pounder had to say about heading into his final season as a Blue Devil.
GoDuke: What was the fall break trip to Wilmington like for you guys this year?
Marcus Cain: “It was really nice. It was the best one yet. In all my four years they have [always] dogged us and worked us out really hard. This year was a little different. We still worked out hard, but it was a lot of building leadership skills and getting to know one another. We did some team events where we got together and told each other life stories, ups and downs, highlights and downfalls of our life and how we got to where we are today. I think that just helps out to know each other and to know how to encourage people or know how to push someone. It was pretty good, a lot of team-building activities.”
GoDuke: What's it like knowing that this is your final season as a Blue Devil?
MC: “It's quick. The coaches always say that you have four years to do it or five years to do it and that's it. At the time when you're a freshman or a sophomore you don't think about it –like yeah that's a long time from now. Now that I'm here it's like man where did the time go? It's been a good road. I'm excited to get out there in the real world and excited to finish up pretty strong here. Hoping for big things in both my wrestling career – my last year – and looking forward to my career."
GoDuke: How are the freshmen transitioning?
MC: “The freshmen are doing great. I think this is one of the best classes. Years before, freshmen came in and they [didn't transition well.] Coming in the previous three years I always thought my year was the best, but I think this freshman class beats us by a long shot. We have some good hard workers. Logan [Day] is out there, he's working hard. Grant [Leeth] is the top recruit and he's crushing people. [Alex] Schenk, he is doing his thing and so is [Luke] Farinaro. He's out there competing with [Jacob] Kasper who did really well last year so the freshmen are transitioning well. It's easy to say that after practice now, but we'll see how that translates into the match. I'm excited about them."
GoDuke: How excited are you to wrestle someone new in the next few weeks?
MC: “Very excited. I think everyone here is pumped for the start of the season. It is a long season, but I think everyone is excited and ready to get out there. We have wrestle-offs in a week and the following week we have the Virginia Tech Open, so I'm going to wrestle some good guys at 149 and we have some good match-ups with IKB [
Immanuel Kerr-Brown] at 157 and [Jake] Faust at 165. I'm ready for it, I'm pumped.”
