DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore midfielder
Toni Payne was named Ronald McDonald House Charities Duke Student-Athlete of the Week Wednesday following leading the Blue Devil women's soccer team to an overtime victory over Boston College this past Sunday.
Payne, a native of Birmingham, Ala., collected the golden goal a minute and 21 seconds into overtime against the Eagles to lift Duke to a 2-1 win on senior day. Freshman
Ashton Miller sent a corner kick to Payne, who one-timed it into the right corner for the game-winner.
In the other match last week, Payne netted a first half goal to give Duke a 1-0 lead at the half against fourth-ranked Virginia. The Blue Devils allowed three second half goals on their way to falling, 3-1, to the Cavaliers. Payne has now posted goals in back-to-back matches twice this season.
The 5-4 midfielder owns a team-high seven goals on the year, including a team-best two game-winners. She ranks tied 10th in points (19) in the latest ACC statistics, while coming in at eighth in shots (52).
The Blue Devils (8-8-1) will close the regular season with a key ACC road match at nationally ranked Florida State Friday, Oct. 31 at 7:00 p.m., on ESPN3.
