Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie
Opening Statement
“It was an interesting game, defensively. I think we really ratcheted it up a little bit in keeping them at 51 or below and really having good team defense. I was very impressed by our group at the end, the group from 3:20 on, they gave us great energy. They might have played the defense better than anyone else played it that night, just in terms of their focus. Obviously, I was very proud of Becca (Greenwell) because Becca's always finding a way to get stuff done and be productive. Any time you get 12 rebounds, that's a lot of work, so that was great. And her scoring and all that good stuff. And the same with Azura (Stevens), just the offensive rebounds really get her game going. She's got this capability of getting to the ball sooner than most and when Azura does, her whole game just picks up. I'm grateful for their performances, I thought they did well. Offensively, we were kind of into doing whatever we wanted, which meant we shot 42 percent. I think it was our poorest shooting outing since we've been playing and I think that had a lot to do with not passing the ball more and running sets more and executing, but we'll get back to that.”
On apparent rushing to start the game
“Well, I was mad at the team, our pride actually, the time that we changed a lot was when [Arlesia Morse] was burying threes. The second half was where it was a little irritating, to have anyone come in to our building and hit five threes. She was just running down the floor and shooting it type of thing and we all faced that kind of shooting against Old Dominion a little bit, that kind of idea, and so I think that's where the team changed, and wake up, we're in a competitive game here and we've got to do what we do and I just felt that the team kind of took it from there, and then executed and attacked and found [Morse] and did the things we're supposed to do.”
On assessing how players have shown Duke has depth beyond Elizabeth Williams
“I think we have a lot of people that can do things and I think it's what we create and great players are going to do it every night so that's the difference. We had some performances at Old Dominion that were pretty spectacular, but not tonight. Anybody can have a good night. Anybody can come up with a good night. The All-Americans, the great players, night in, night out, deliver under any circumstance. We're still developing that consistency. We haven't done that as well.”
On Azura Stevens's efficiency
“I think that's just really indicative of Azura's ability and I know Azura was upset at herself at Old Dominion because her game wasn't to that level and I think the message is, what I'd like Azura to know, is what she's capable of night in and night out. She's an extremely capable, very poised player and nothing should get in the way of that and I think tonight you saw that nothing got in the way and she took full advantage.”
On Azura Stevens posing a match up problem for opposing defenses
“Nobody can match up with Azura, nobody can. She can step outside and shoot the three and she hasn't had to because she's been scoring on the inside a lot but that will come too. I just think it's all part of it. I think the experience is what getting these games is really important and I think we're getting better and learning. That happens a lot in sports, especially team sports. You want to do so well individually, you can get caught up in it and then it takes away your focus. I think just us working together, placing the team first, all the time, and allowing our gifts to just go crazy at that point, that's the way to play the game. I think that's the way Becca plays the game, I think that's the way Azura played the game tonight, and I think that's the secret to productivity, to be thinking about what we're supposed to be doing and don't get outside of that, even if I hit 10 threes in a row, don't get outside of what we're doing.”
Duke Redshirt Freshman Rebecca Greenwell
On her increased experience:
“[Redshirting] was definitely a great decision. It was a year of learning, and it definitely has carried over to this year. I feel like my knowledge of the game has increased, and different aspects of my game as well. I think that's [confidence] the number one thing that was most important, coming in last year. Anybody from high school to college level—it's a big jump, and it's a big change, so having a whole year to learn from veterans and just practice with them definitely helped increase my confidence.
On first home regular season game nerves and team momentum:
“I wasn't that nervous. We've played a few games already, but I definitely think it was just finding the touch, and I got my feet set and really focused on the shot and the rest started following. Once one of us starts making some shots, everyone else starts to follow and start doing the same thing, so I think it helps get the game rolling.”
Duke Freshman Azurá Stevens
On changes from the Old Dominion game:
“I think the main difference was just thinking of the team before myself. At Old Dominion, and I had a semi-decent game in Alabama, but I was a little bit prideful, so going into this game I was really trying to focus on the team goals, and what we were going to get done as a team and the rest just came.”
On staying humble:
“Again, just focusing on those team goals. Before this game, I was really concentrating on different things that we need to do as a team with defense and stuff, so that's the key to it.”
Marquette Head Coach Carolyn Kieger
Opening Statement:
“That's a very good Duke basketball team. They're very deep, they don't have very many weaknesses They're gonna make a deep run into the tournament I believe. But I thought our players fought, I thought we had about a 12-to-15 minute stretch where we played really hard, and I am really proud of the girls for that stretch of minutes. Obviously we have a lot of things we need to work on, that we need to fix but we'll just keep getting better every day. I tip my hat to Duke because even without guards right now and their inexperience at the guard spot they are really doing a great job taking care of the ball and setting each other up.”
On starting both halves out strong:
“I think when are able to get together and talk through things a bit and game plan a little bit more and we are able to kind of teach it is helping, and I think that's something that we have to get used to as a new staff and as a new team is them being able to sustain that even when we don't have a half time, or a pregame speech so those 40 minutes we are gonna keep working on that.”
On foul trouble, depth, and balancing the team's offense:
“Well in terms of our depth we just have to keep getting better every day skill wise, we were just telling our team in the locker room right now that it is gonna be about our skill set. You know every day the game plan is gonna be important, but we are gonna have to keep getting better as individual s every day. So you know we are gonna be able to give the starters a rest, and foul trouble when it becomes an issue we are gonna be able to play those bench player a little bit more so that's something that we just have to focus on every day, and the skill set to get those bench players better.”
On the fatigue factor at the end of that game:
“I think it's a situation where we started to take rushed shots, and we started to panic a bit as the clock got closer to zero we started forcing things. We just have to become a better ball club and realize every possession matters, and don't force shots when we don't need to.”
On Rebecca Greenwell:
"Well I think Greenwell is gonna do a great job of filling the shoes of Tricia Liston. I think she's stepping in as a freshman right away taking that role off of losing Tricia Liston from last year. I think she is gonna be very good for her four years here. She is a fantastic player and even after that knee injury it doesn't look like she skipped a beat.”
Marquette Senior Guard Arlesia Morse
On second half rally:
“Our coach wanted us to play hard and we started out well like you said, and we came out at halftime like cut the lead down. I think it was 20 when we went into half time and we wanted to get it down to 12 and then to eight each media timeout. And that's what kept us motivated, and we just wanted to fight throughout the game.”
On getting into a rhythm:
“In the first half I was rushing on a lot of my shots. But in the second half my teammates found me and gave me more of an opportunity to get my shot together, and get my feet under me. So I just had to get into a rhythm.”
On finishing the game:
“I would applaud Duke, they outrebounded us, which led to us fouling them because we weren't boxing out. We just weren't converting shots, like we had the same opportunities earlier in the half, just towards the end of the game we weren't making them and Duke was converting.”
