DURHAM, N.C.-- It's hard to believe the first semester of the school year is already over. Exams and papers finished, holiday parties underway and the long-awaited trip home to Kentucky for the holidays has happened!
With the semester finished, it's nice to have a little break from school and just be able to focus on basketball. Balancing both is difficult but now is the time of year where basketball can be the No. 1 priority, at least until school starts back up. As Coach Brown says, it's the start of a new season as our non-conference games are winding down and we have just two left before the conference regular season begins.
During this break we've had the chance to spend more time as a team as well as make an impact around the community. The other day, the whole team and Coach P visited the Duke Children's Hospital and spent some time meeting and playing with children who were staying there for the holidays. We met some very inspiring and strong kids and it felt good to see how happy they were just by us visiting them. We also had our annual team Christmas party at coach P's house, which was a lot of fun. We all wore our Christmas sweaters, played secret Santa, and ate an amazing meal cooked by Sam, our team chef. We had sweet potatoes, mac-n-cheese, crab cakes, ham, turkey, pumpkin pie, carrot cake, and many more which was amazing per usual thanks to Sam! We also had our team-only Christmas party, which was tons of fun as always!
Last week was a lot of fun but as are the rest of my teammates, I'm more than ready for some family time, comfort foods, sleeping in late, and more than anything just some good old fashion rest and relaxation! Well, the presents are nice too :)
After our game against Kentucky, I flew back home for Christmas with my Mom and started enjoying a short break with my family. My flight returns 6 A.M. the 26th so by short I mean short…but we have to get back to prepare for our big game Dec. 29 against UConn. Although it will have to be short and sweet I'm just thankful I get to go home. After about three days with my little sisters Briley and Emma, I'm usually exhausted and ready anyway. They are so much fun but I'm sure after three days of them attached to my legs and being forced to play with them I'll be worn down. I can't wait to see what amazing homemade gifts Emma will have in store for me this year! Those are always the best and very creative! Last year, I received an interesting cotton ball ornament so I'm not sure how she's going to top that one.
I have a lot of people to visit when I get back and am blessed to be a part of a big family. I may try and catch an Owensboro Catholic H.S. game or two and visit my high school coaches and teammates at their Holiday tournament. I also love going to Mass at Blessed Mother with my family and seeing all the familiar faces from back home. I have a lot to be thankful for. I have an amazing family here at Duke and another at home in Kentucky that I can't wait to see soon!
Happy Holidays and Go Duke!
