DURHAM, N.C.—For the first time in Duke wrestling history, the Blue Devils will be represented at the prestigious early season dual of some of the nation's top wrestlers as Conner Hartmann was selected for the Hire Heroes NWCA All-Star Classic presented by the Wrestlers in Business Network. The 50th anniversary of the event will be held Nov. 1 in Atlanta, Ga., and will be televised on ESPNU.
Ranked third in both the InterMat and FloWrestling preseason polls, Hartmann will go up against No. 5 Max Huntley of Michigan. The dual will be the first meeting between the two All-Americans.
“Duke University is known the world over for its tremendous academics,” said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. “To have a student-athlete of this caliber represent Duke at the All-Star Classic for the first time is a tremendous accomplishment for coach Glen Lanham's team and for the school as a whole.”
A two-time All-American, Hartmann will look to become Duke's first three-time All-American after earning a spot on the podium at the past two NCAA Championships. Posting a 21-5 overall record in a Duke singlet in 2014-15, Hartmann captured his first ACC title at 197 pounds and went on to a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
Sporting a 68-27 career record as a Blue Devil, the Port Orchard, Wash., native garnered his first All-America award in 2014 after going from unseeded to the fifth place after defeating the Nos. 10, 7, and 11 seeds.
Hartmann, seeded 10th in 2015, beat the No. 7 and No. 2 seeded wrestlers en route to the NCAA semifinals.
Huntley has battled injuries throughout his career in Ann Arbor, but last year, he finally broke through and hit the podium with an eighth-place finish. The NCAA granted Huntley a sixth year of eligibility after he'd seen two prior seasons end due to injuries. He finished last season with a 24-11 record.
The All-Star Classic will air live on ESPNU from 5-7 p.m., November 1 from McCamish Pavilion on the campus of Georgia Tech.
