About Hartmann
Hartmann will begin his final season as a Blue Devil ranked third by both FloWrestling and InterMat. The Port Orchard, Wash., native has moved up two spots in the preseason polls from a year ago. A two-time All-American, Hartmann has earned spots on the podium in each of the past two NCAA Championships. Posting a 21-5 overall record in a Duke singlet in 2014-15, Hartmann captured his first ACC title at 197 pounds and went on to a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. He took fifth in 2014 after heading into the NCAA Championships unseeded.
Scouting Max Huntley
Awaiting Hartmann at the NWCA All-Star Classic is Max Huntley of Michigan. A 2015 All-American, Huntley has battled injuries throughout his career in Ann Arbor, but last year, finally broke through and hit the podium with an eighth-place finish. The NCAA granted Huntley a sixth year of eligibility after he'd seen two prior seasons end due to injuries. He finished last season with a 24-11 record.
Like Ships Passing in the Night
Despite Duke and Michigan squaring off in duals twice during their careers, Hartmann and Huntley have yet to wrestle each other. In the first dual in 2013, Huntley was held out of the match as Hartmann defeated Chris Heald 9-0. This past season, Hartmann was battling the flu when Duke traveled to Ann Arbor. And finally in the NCAA Championships this season, they missed each other by a round as Hartmann advanced to the semifinals.
Hartmann on the Invitation to the All-Star Classic
“I've been looking forward to this for a while,” said Hartmann. “I had my fingers crossed I would get an invitation and things ended up sliding into place just right. It was kind of a funny story because I had expressed interest in the event before and Coach [Ben] Wissel texted me asking if I would want to go to the all-star classic if I could. When I got out of class I called him. He asked 'Do you want to go in case you're invited?' I said 'Absolutely.' And then he just said, 'Well good you're invited.'”
Lanham on the NWCA All-Star Classic Invitaiton
“If there is someone deserving of this invitation, it's Conner Hartmann,” said Lanham. “He's put in the time and trained throughout the summers. It's a measuring stick for our program too and it lets the other guys know that something like this is possible for Duke student-athletes. We're excited about it.”
Lanham on Hartmann's Growth
“We've definitely see Conner grow in terms of his leadership,” Lanham said. “He was a quiet guy coming into the program and he's more vocal now. He kind of expects guys to train at the same level he's training. It's contagious what he does. He leads by example, but now he's more vocal and that's where I've seen him grow.”
Hokie Open Awaits Blue Devils
The Duke wrestling team will kick off the 2015-16 season as a team at the Hokie Open Nov. 8. The Open is set to begin at 9 a.m., at Rector Fieldhouse.
