DURHAM, N.C. – The 13
th-ranked Duke Blue Devils outscored UMass 19-6 in the third quarter to power past the Minutewomen Monday night in Cameron Indoor Stadium, registering a 70-46 victory. Sophomore
Azurá Stevens paced the home team with her sixth double-double of the season, stuffing the stat sheet with 24 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Stevens was joined in double-figures by redshirt sophomore
Rebecca Greenwell with 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists and redshirt freshman
Lyneé Belton with 10 points in her first career start, tying her personal high set last season against Oklahoma.
The Blue Devils move to 8-2 on the season with the win, while UMass falls to 3-6. Bria Stallworth led the visiting team in the defeat, totaling 20 points on 8-of-26 shooting.
Duke sprinted out to an early 15-6 advantage as Belton and Stevens
combined to score nine of Duke's first 13 points, but three straight UMass baskets cut the lead to 15-12 heading to the second period. In what was a back-and-forth battle the rest of the half, Stevens carried the team to the break by netting 10 points in the second quarter alone to put Duke ahead 33-26. The Blue Devils' stingy defense held the Minutewomen's offense in check during the first 20 minutes of action as they shot just 11-of-33 (33.3 percent) from the field, compared to Duke's 14-of-27 (51.9 percent) shooting performance.
Coming out of the break, a quick 10-0 run by the home team, again sparked by Stevens and Belton, pushed the Blue Devils' lead to 43-26 early in the third period. Duke continued to roll the rest of the half, answering each UMass score with points of its own to cement a 52-32 lead at the end of the third. After Greenwell connected on a three from deep, junior
Kendall Cooper converted an and-one opportunity before knocking down a jumper to answer a Minutewomen three-pointer and halt any opposing momentum.
The fourth quarter saw Duke build on its already insurmountable lead, capping the win with an 18-14 fourth-quarter showing. Duke's tenacity on defense forced a number of miscues from the Minutewomen as they committed 10 of their 16 turnovers in the second half. UMass finished by shooting 18-of-61 (29.5 percent) from the floor while connecting on just 4-of-25 (16.0 percent) from deep.
Duke will return to action Thursday night, hosting Liberty at 7:00 p.m. The matchup with the Flames will be aired on BDN+.
