Duke Head Coach Mike KrzyzewskiOn long scoreless streak to start the game:“A lot of it had to do with their defense. We scored more when we got defensive rebounds. Against their half-court defense, we had a tough time scoring because they are big and really well coached. And that's why that happened, I think.”
On decision to foul up three at the end of game:“We tried to get them to use a little bit of time in the back court, and that's why we wanted to pressure the ball. We thought it was a good idea to do that because then they would have to come back and get it. Once they get passed half court, we tried to take it while they were dribbling, not while they were shooting.”
On whether Duke knew that Florida State would intentionally miss the free throw:“Yeah I had a good idea, that's why I put all our big guys in there.”
On strategy to get Xavier Rathan-Mayes out of the game: “We tried to put as much pressure and trap screens in ball screens to make it difficult. I don't know Leonard's substitution pattern but to be quite frank with you, they played quite well without him. (Devon) Bookert had an exceptional game. I thought they responded with Xavier on the bench. Bookert was outstanding today, not that he's always not outstanding. Both teams are young and I thought they played extremely well. They played winning basketball. And that is why beating them in this game was a well-earned victory.”
On competitive nature of the game:“I think the coaching has been incredible. No one is letting you beat them; you have to beat these teams. You go 1-15, we got really good coaches, players have pride. This conference is amazing, it's the best conference. We could have lost tonight, we could have lost to Georgia Tech last week by or two possessions like tonight. That says a lot about the conference.”
Florida State Head Coach Leonard HamiltonOpening Statement:“I thought Duke did a tremendous job of taking advantage of some of our youth and inexperience. They did such a good job of defending us in the first half that I thought that they created a lot of indecision on our part. They sped us up. We took some very quick shots and each time we took a quick shot or ill-advised shot they made us pay in transition. I thought in the second half we settled down a little bit better. At least we got into what we intended to do offensively in the first half and at least we were able to challenge them somewhat. Like most great teams that are well-coached they found a way to counter every surge that we made. They were extremely patient. You could tell they knew where they were supposed to be and they found guys on the perimeter. I think in one stretch when we cut it, I think they hit about three three's in a row. Once again we dug a hole that was difficult for us to climb out of however our guys kept fighting. I thought we showed a lot of willpower and I think that we really made the necessary adjustments to go out and play against a good team in the second half except we came up a little short. You just have to give them credit. They are a great team, very well-coached and they are loaded with talent. We got beat by a team that was a little bit better than us tonight.”
On holding Duke scoreless to begin the game for the first 6 and a half minutes:“I think that our guys on the defensive end were solid. I think we forced some turnovers, except once they got passed that period (Duke's scoring drought in the first 6 and a half minutes of the game) they did a much better job of taking more advantage of the mistakes we made than we did of theirs. They are a good basketball team. There is no doubt about it. But right now what we are is 5-7 with enough games remaining for us to dig ourselves back into conversation – plus we have an ACC Tournament. I am more concerned about making sure that we continue to keep getting better and we are getting better. It's just that coming close doesn't count unless you're playing horseshoes.”
On what junior guard Devon Bookert could have done differently on the last possession down three-points:“You always focus on the last possession or two in games, but in reality we dug a hole for ourselves in that situation in the first four possessions in the game when we turned the ball over four times in a row.”
