Duke Welcomes Amaker, Harvard for Brotherhood Run

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke will welcome former Blue Devil All-American Tommy Amaker back to Cameron Indoor Stadium when the Blue Devils host Harvard for the Brotherhood Run on Friday, Dec. 4.
Amaker was a four-year starter at point guard for head coach Mike Krzyzewski from 1983-87, helping Duke compile a 108-30 record with four NCAA Tournament appearances, the 1986 ACC Tournament championship and a run to the 1986 national championship game.
As a senior in 1986-87, Amaker earned All-America honors and was named the NABC National Defensive Player of the Year. He started all 138 games during his Duke career, a program record for consecutive starts, and ranks seventh in school history with 4,666 minutes played. His 708 assists and 259 steals each rank third among Blue Devils, while his 1,168 points place him among Duke's top 50 career scorers.
Amaker returned to Duke as a graduate assistant in 1988 and remained on Krzyzewski's staff for nine years. During his tenure, the Blue Devils posted a 230-80 record, won national championships in 1991 and 1992 and advanced to five Final Fours. Combined, Duke went 338-110 (.754) during Amaker's time as a Blue Devil player and coach.

"Tommy is one of the people who helped shape Duke Basketball into what it is today, first as an incredible player and then as a coach. I have so much respect for the way he's led throughout his career and for everything he's built at Harvard. The opportunity to compete against someone who embodies The Brotherhood is unbelievable for our players. It's part of the history and tradition that makes this program so special."
Following the 1996-97 campaign, Amaker began his head-coaching career at Seton Hall. He spent four seasons with the Pirates and six at Michigan before taking over at Harvard in 2007. Under Amaker, the Crimson have won seven Ivy League championships, earned eight postseason berths and recorded the first two NCAA Tournament victories in program history, and his 321 victories are the most by a Harvard head coach.
Amaker was inducted into the Duke Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001.
"Our entire program is grateful to Duke Basketball for making this opportunity possible through the Brotherhood Run series," Amaker said. "It will certainly be a meaningful moment for me to return to Cameron Indoor Stadium – a place that is filled with so many special memories for me as a player and coach. I know our team will embrace competing in such a high-level environment against such a storied program."
The Dec. 4 contest will be the 11th meeting between Duke and Harvard and the first since Nov. 30, 1991. The Blue Devils have won each of the previous 10 matchups.
Game time, television information and ticket details will be announced at a later date.
In recent years, the Brotherhood Run has welcomed several former Blue Devil players back to Cameron Indoor Stadium as opposing head coaches, including Bobby Hurley with Arizona State, Johnny Dawkins with UCF, Kenny Blakeney with Howard and Greg Paulus with Niagara. The matchups, held as regular-season or exhibition contests, celebrate Duke Basketball's history while recognizing members of The Brotherhood who have continued their careers in coaching.
