DURHAM, N.C. – The 22nd-ranked Duke women's basketball team battled through a tough third quarter to emerge with a 71-51 victory over Boston College Sunday at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Redshirt sophomore Rebecca Greenwell sank five treys to pace the offense with 23 points and sophomore Azurá Stevens recorded her ACC-leading 11th double-double of the year in the win.
The Blue Devils displayed a dominating presence inside, holding a 37-21 advantage on the boards and totaling seven blocks on the day, to improve to 13-6 overall and 2-3 in ACC play.
Stevens poured in the game's first seven points before the Eagles rattled off a pair of threes. Duke controlled the paint from the early going and held Boston College scoreless for over four minutes to take a 17-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Stevens' nine points led all players through the first 10 minutes while junior Oderah Chidom registered three of the Blue Devils' four blocks in the period and added six points.
Duke maintained its advantage on the boards into the second quarter, although both teams went through a cold shooting stretch. Amber Henson matched a career high with her fourth steal of the game as the Blue Devils capitalized on Boston College turnovers during a scoring drought for the visiting squad. The spread was only three points for the period, but Duke headed to the locker room at the break with a 30-18 lead.
The Eagles opened the second half with five unanswered and went on to cut the margin to one on a Kelly Hughes trey with four minutes remaining in the period. Stevens responded by converting a three-point play off of an offensive board and came up with her second block on the other end. The teams then traded baskets, putting the score at 47-41 in the Blue Devils' favor heading into the final quarter.
Greenwell drained her third trey at the beginning of the fourth frame and Henson followed suit, pushing the lead back into double digits. Greenwell would add two more from behind the arc before the final buzzer as Duke rounded out the game shooting nearly 50 percent from the floor.
Stevens finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds and Chidom and freshman Crystal Primm chipped in eight points apiece. Hughes matched Greenwell's five treys to lead Boston College with 20 points in the loss.
Duke hits the road later this week, traveling to Clemson Thursday for a 7 p.m. contest on ESPN3.
