DURHAM, N.C. – Junior guard Lexie Brown turned in a Duke-career best 20 points to lift the Blue Devils past Penn in a 68-55 victory Sunday afternoon in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Brown led all players with 20 points, finishing 8-of-16 from the floor, 3-of-7 from behind the arc, and added three rebounds and three assists. Senior forward Oderah Chidom tied her career-best in rebounds with 14 and totaled eight points, four assists, two blocks and three steals in her overall performance.
Duke got off to an early lead in the first quarter after an 8-0 run, highlighted by sophomore guard Kyra Lambert with a quick six points. The Blue Devils totaled an easy 13 points off Penn's turnovers in the first and ended the afternoon with 19 points off the Quakers' 15.
The second quarter saw the Blue Devils struggle from the floor, going 4-of-16, but Duke maintained a 35-23 lead to go into the half. Brown led all players with 13 points after the first 20 minutes of play, followed by Lambert and Greenwell each with eight.
Lambert went 4-of-6 from the floor, 2-for-3 in three-point territory, ripped down four rebounds and added 11 points, two assists and one steal in her solid afternoon performance.
Duke struggled with ball control in the third, turning it over six times to allow the Quakers to cut the lead to within nine. The Blue Devils finished the contest committing 16 turnovers, but Penn only capitalized to score eight.
Duke was solid in the paint with 45 rebounds and 32 points. Redshirt junior Rebecca Greenwell brought down eight boards and added 17 points, went 5-of-6 from the foul line, and totaled two assists and one steal.
After two quick threes one minute into the fourth by Brown and Greenwell, Duke once again led by double digits, extending their lead to 56-41. Penn answered when Michelle Nwodeki hit two threes to put the Quakers within 11. Duke continued to pull ahead and gain the victory in Durham.
As a team, Duke shot 41.0 percent from the floor, 43.8 percent from behind the arc and recorded a 64.7 free throw percentage over four quarters of action.
The Blue Devils will host Longwood Tuesday, Nov. 15 in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
