NORTH CAROLINA POSTGAME QUOTES
North Carolina 57, Duke 93 • February 28, 2016
Duke Head Coach McCallie
Opening Statement:
“Really excited about that first half of basketball because it was so clean, and it was so team-driven in terms of finding each other. To have 17 assists at halftime, that's just terrific basketball, and that's something that we can really learn for ball movement and finding each other. I definitely thought Becca [Greenwell] and Kyra [Lambert] set the tone for that in terms of how they attacked, and how we moved the ball and how they found each other, so that was some good stuff for us, really good and something we can build off of heading into the tournament.”
On statement made in the first half:
“Well I don't know statements, I don't know how that works. I think what was most important is we've told ourselves just how good we can continue to be. We didn't keep it up as much in the second half. We can just take from this and get better. We know we're a very good team. The adversity we've had has been outside of our control. You know, some other teams that have struggled, let's say, and we keep getting looped in with them, but that's been inside of their control. For us, it's been completely outside our control, this adversity so, we know we can play and it was great to see the team come together, like they did. We look forward to still trying to add Azurá [Stevens] and build from that, so we can be better and stronger.”
On this game being like the start of tournament season:
“I think it is kind of like that, starting the tournament. I would agree with that statement completely, because of where the game falls, and we refuse to be desperate. What's happened to us is the most incredible story in women's basketball this year, whether it's food poisoning, femur fractures – we've had it all. It's been the most ridiculous circumstance I've ever seen, and this team has found a way to get better and keep pushing and that's what we have to do. This team is a great story, and we just have to continue to try to make each other better. We've got six people on practice, we've got people that don't practice, and we've got all sorts of issues. But the bottom line is if we play like this and connect it like this, then you feel like you can really do some special things.”
On what today meant for Duke:
“I mean we took every game as a learning experience, and we grew from every game. So, we're just trying to get better and work on what Duke basketball does. I learned that perseverance and grit and will are key things for us. It's in our philosophy, and we refuse, as Coach [McCallie] said, to make excuses.”
“Rebounding was definitely key, especially for this game. We knew that that was going to determine the outcome of the game, so I think we really just took it to heart and it showed. Everyone was really just attacking the O-boards. We wanted five people on the D-boards on every possessions, and I think we did a really good job of that.”

North Carolina Head Coach Sylvia Hatchell
Opening Statement:
“Regular season is over. Time to get ready for tournament time. I understand we play Pittsburgh at 1PM on Wednesday. We need to learn a lot from tonight. The rebounding has been our Achilles heel all year and it definitely was tonight too. But these kids right here (Stephanie Watts and Hillary Summers), really battled hard. Both of them are warriors, they're tough in there. Duke played really well and they shot the ball really good. I am so impressed with
Rebecca Greenwell because she just took them on her back, such a tough player. They just played really well. Their 3-2 zone just gave us a lot of trouble trying to get the ball inside. We've done pretty good against it in the past, but we didn't have anybody that could make that jump shot and get the read up there because the high post is open all the time. But we just didn't have anybody that could make that shot and then get the dump downs inside. Our defense in the first half was basically non-existent because they just scored at will. But, it's over. ACC Tournament time is here. I just talked to the team downstairs about what the ACC Tournament means and how well we've always played. I told them, I think 15 of the last 22 years we've played for the Championship, we've been in the Championship game many times. We've done that with some teams that were not seeded that high, so we've got a tough battle but I want to go over there and make some noise. I want the team to show up at the ACC Tournament like the team that beat Syracuse. Duke played well, shot the ball good, got rebounds, basically we didn't defend them very well.”
On the second quarter:
“We just fell apart. I was thinking I was going to have to use all my timeouts before halftime. But, we didn't make some good decisions. We got the ball inside and had some good shots but didn't capitalize on them. We were getting one shot and no rebounds, not getting second chance points has been our weakness all year.”
Stephanie Watts G
On the ACC Tournament:
“I know it's tough. This team always makes runs in the Tournament and we're a good enough team, whether our record shows it or not, to make a run in this tournament and that's what we're going to do.”
Hillary Summers F
On her career high in rebounds:
“I was trying to make sure I was focusing on boxing out because Duke is a long tall team. So you can't really jump with them, you have to make sure you're boxing out. I feel like we just got behind because our defense, we have to do better with that. We can score all day but if you're not stopping the other team you can't win.”
