DURHAM, N.C. – Coming off a tough loss to No. 3 Notre Dame Monday night, the Duke women's basketball team bounced back in impressive fashion, topping Virginia Thursday night in Cameron Indoor Stadium, 67-52.
With sophomore Azurá Stevens out of the lineup for the first time this season, redshirt sophomore Rebecca Greenwell shined for the Blue Devils, filling the stat sheet with 25 points, 12 rebounds and four assists for her first double-double of the season. Greenwell and freshman Angela Salvadores provided a large portion of the scoring for the home team, combining for 42 points on 17-of-25 (68.0 percent) shooting from the field and 7-of-9 (77.8 percent) from three-point range.
With the win, Duke moves to 17-7 (6-4 ACC) on the season, while Virginia drops to 13-10 (3-6 ACC).
The Cavaliers stormed out of the gate and were dialed in shooting the ball, connecting on five of their first seven shots to build an early 12-5 lead over the Blue Devils. Duke responded in a hurry, scoring the next 15 points to take a 20-12 lead into the second period. Redshirt sophomore Rebecca Greenwell paced the home team in the opening quarter, registering eight points and connecting on both of her three-point attempts, and Duke controlled the interior with a 12-2 advantage in points in the paint.
The hot shooting continued for the Blue Devils in the second quarter, outscoring Virginia 23-14 to enter the halftime break up 43-26. Highlighting the action was Greenwell and freshman Angela Salvadores combining for 17 of Duke's 23 points in the period. The Blue Devils' stingy defense was on full display in the first half as well, limiting the Cavaliers to 10-of-32 (31.3 percent) shooting from the field and owning a 23-12 advantage on the boards.
Coming out of the locker room, the Cavaliers used an 11-2 run to cut Duke's lead to single-digits halfway through the third quarter. Greenwell provided the Blue Devils some breathing room after knocking down a jumper and finding junior Oderah Chidom for an easy layup, but Virginia answered with a pair of threes to trim the lead to 49-43. After trading baskets, Greenwell went on a personal 5-0 run in the final minute to send Duke into the final quarter up 56-45. The Blue Devils cemented their lead by outscoring the Cavaliers, 11-7, in the fourth.
Up next for Duke, the Blue Devils will travel to Coral Gables, Fla., to battle the Miami Hurricanes Sunday, Feb. 7 at 1 p.m.
