GREENSBORO, N.C. – Leading by one at the intermission, Duke persevered in a back-and-forth second half to top Virginia, 57-53, in the second round of the ACC Tournament Thursday at Greensboro Coliseum. With the win, the Blue Devils (20-11) advance to face top seed Notre Dame in Friday's quarterfinals, which tip off at 2 p.m. on RSN.
Sophomore Azurá Stevens notched her 13th double-double of the season in her return to the court, totaling 14 points and 15 rebounds. Junior Oderah Chidom scored 20 points for the second-straight contest and added nine rebounds, while freshman Kyra Lambert chipped in nine points and a career-best seven boards.
Stevens and Chidom paced the Blue Devils in the third quarter, giving them their largest lead at seven. Both teams went through a tough shooting stretch, but Duke remained on top, 43-38, heading into the final period.
The Cavaliers pulled back within two at the beginning of the fourth frame and stayed within striking distance. The Blue Devils built a five-point advantage midway through the quarter but Virginia drained three consecutive treys to get back in front at 53-50.
Duke went back up by two on late free throws by freshmen Lambert and Angela Salvadores and put together a strong defensive stand on Virginia's go-ahead attempt in the final minute. Chidom added a pair from the charity stripe in the waning seconds to seal the second round win.
The Cavaliers sank three of their first four attempts from behind the arc to take a 13-8 lead in the opening minutes. Duke rebounded from a three-minute scoring drought to trim the margin to four by the end of the first quarter. Defensively, the Blue Devils totaled five blocks in the period, led by two from Stevens.
After shooting 60 percent from the floor in the first 10 minutes, Duke struggled to get into an offensive rhythm in the next frame until Stevens launched a three at the 6:12 mark. Her trey pulled the Blue Devils back within four at 22-18.
Duke narrowed it to a one-point game twice before getting back in front on a Stevens layup with three minutes remaining in the half. Chidom converted a three-point play and added a layup of her own to extend the Blue Devils' run to nine unanswered points. The squad headed to the locker room at the intermission leading by one, 30-29.
For the contest, Duke shot 31 percent from the floor and sank just one three-pointer to eight by the Cavaliers. The Blue Devils rounded out the game with a commanding 49-32 advantage on the boards.
Aliyah Huland El led Virginia with 16 points while Lauren Moses and Faith Randolph chipped in 11 each.
