Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie
Opening Statement:
“I'm very proud of our team's defense in the second half in particular but in the first half as well. Lexie [Brown] and Kyra [Lambert] were a big part of that energy. Getting them out of their rhythm and flow was important to us and I thought we did that. Forcing them to shoot 32 percent from the floor was a good thing for us. We're working on the rebounding and it disappoints us to be out rebounded. Kyra's poise, calling plays and executing them was important and Lexie had great poise tonight. She had no turnovers even with playing all those minutes with the attention she draws. Good stuff and stuff we can build off of.”
On 18-0 run in the second half:
“We played with great intensity on defense and complete disruption of them offensively. We fed off of that and made good choices. We pushed the ball, controlled the tempo, pushed the tempo and it was just a total team attack. The guards were playing their handoffs well and causing confusion for them, which led to deflections, steals and turnovers. Obviously just some excellent play in moving the ball and finding shooters.”
On Virginia Tech's Chanette Hicks:
“We had to make sure she didn't get any layups. She had six turnovers and zero steals. Offensively, we were aware of her when she was in the vicinity. Our defensive positioning, led by Lexie and Kyra, was difficult to play against. She wasn't always sure of what to do. When you can affect someone's poise, that is a strong statement defensively and we were able to do that at times.”
On Rebecca Greenwell's game play:
“She is just growing her game. She is capable of a lot of things and I thought her four offensive rebounds were totally key to her game. When she is active and has rebounds like that, that is part of her role as a player. She plays hard defensively and got some great steals. She has been steady and coming along. She gets defined so much from her shooting, which is okay I guess, but I look at her as a multifaceted player. I liked that she stayed focused, kept her poise and played hard.”
On taking care of the ball:
“Well I love when a team takes care of the ball, for the record. Turnovers are an awful thing. Unless you're like Kyra and streak down the court and block a good shot. That takes away the turnover for sure.”
Sophomore Guard Kyra Lambert
On Duke's second quarter steals:
“We just wanted to come out with intensity, and really put some pressure on them and ball pressure on the guards. They turned it over and we converted on them.”
On responding to turnovers:
“With a turnover, you can't make two mistakes in a row. You make a turnover, like Coach P. says, go harder and try to get it back. I just wanted to make sure that she didn't score, and stop the defense. The main thing coming out of halftime, we just wanted to be harder on the defense and apply a lot of pressure and be aggressive. ”
On the difference between home games and away games:
“I think the main thing is the intensity that we bring at home. Just getting after people, especially on the defensive end. We need to play that way away. Anywhere we go, it shouldn't matter. We need to bring this on the road, and bring that defensive intensity.”
Junior Guard Lexie Brown
On her great game play today:
“I just have been doing a lot of meditating. The past couple of games haven't been my best games, mentally, scoring, passing the ball, or rebounding. I've kind of been a little bit absent, in my opinion. I've had the support of my teammates and Coach P. I had to get in the gym a little extra in this past week, but my teammates gave me all the confidence in the world in the first quarter and I just took that and went with it.”
On Leaonna Odom's play in the second half:
“We missed her in the first half. She gives us length. She gives other teams a mismatch problem, and she gives us a presence inside with her length. We told her the whole halftime, you got this, you've got fresh legs. You sat the whole half, so just get the ball and go. I think she took that to heart, and came out with a lot of energy, and we're proud to see her growing every game.”
Virginia Tech Head Coach Kenny Brooks:
Opening Statement:
“I'm disappointed in the way that we composed ourselves after they went on their run. I thought we got off to a pretty good start and played with a lot of energy and a lot of confidence, and obviously Chanute [Hicks] got in foul trouble, and changed the complexion of who we are. She did a good job in the first half of manning the point, but it also kind of throws us out of rhythm a little bit. But, needless to say I thought we were where we wanted to be at halftime, considering the circumstances. We came out in the second half, and they went on that tremendous run to start the 3rd quarter, and we never really dug ourselves out of that hole. I'm disappointed with the way that we ran our offense; I just felt like we started to play one-on-one basketball. Give them credit they did a really good job of forcing us out and out of rhythm; forcing us out on the perimeter, and out of rhythm. And they made shots; they shot the ball extremely well. We put them in certain situations, and they shot the ball well from the three, and obviously Lexie Brown had a really good night, really propelled them. I don't think that was indicative of who we are or what we can do; but, this is the ACC, I think it's the best league in the country, and if you don't come to play each and every night, you're going to have nights like this. We'll get back to the drawing board.”
On depending of Chanute Hicks
“We're dependent on each and every one of them….we're not very deep…obviously everyone has a significant role for us who plays, and like I said, Sami Hill did a really good job of manning the point while Chanute was out, but we need Chanute in the game for us to be effective, and when she went out, it didn't have immediate effects, but what it has is a lasting effect because now Sami's had to play such an enduring role throughout the second quarter, and leading into the third quarter, probably affects her more in the fourth quarter because she has so much pressure put on her, and it just took us out of rhythm. I did play Chanute one or two more minutes in the second quarter, but we were right there, so I just really couldn't put her back in the game”
On going on the road in the ACC and attention to detail
“Well, it's something I've been preaching for a long time. I'm not trying to be the gloom-and-doom coach, but I keep telling our kids, 'We have to take care of details because this is the best league in the country, and if you don't handle every situation right every time, things can escalate,' and that's what happened tonight. In the first quarter, we handled the ball screens extremely well, we rotated, we were where we were supposed to be. Chanute goes out, she's pretty much the anchor of our defense, and things just kind of escalated from there. We stopped paying attention to the details; we weren't covering things like we were in the first quarter, and as a result they go on this tremendous run to start the third quarter, and it changes the whole complexion of the basketball game. I've been preaching it, talking about it, and now we have proof. We'll go back, we'll watch it, we'll talk about it, we will learn from it. You know, we didn't think we were going to win every game in the ACC. We started off very hot, and we understand that this is a very tough league. I think the key to it is how you bounce back from losses like this and then continue on, because every night is going to be a fight.”
Senior Forward Sidney Cook
On the toughness of stopping Duke's offense:
“I would say the ball screen action really hurt us because when the post would hedge up on the screen, we didn't have backside help and they would get layups. So I felt that was a big part of their lead.”
Sophomore Guard Chanette Hicks
On Duke's first run of the game:
“I just felt like they was staying together and we weren't. We were more kind of bickering. Coach just tells us that all the time, don't fight within each other because the other team can see that. They had a run and we didn't stop the run, we just kept letting them go.”
On her aggressiveness after called for the charge in the first quarter:
“I was kind of just nervous that I'd get another one really early, so it kind of stopped me from going to the basket, but I just can't allow that to happen because things turn out like this.”
On her aggressiveness in the second half:
“I'm not really sure, I just, I don't know. It just wasn't my night, I guess.”
On her feelings after the team's largest loss this season:
“Well, first thing, we don't think they are that many points better than us because we just kind of let them get that many. I'm sure it won't happen again.”
On the toughness of stopping Duke's offense:
“They really scored out on that zone and I just feel like teams play us zone because they can't guard us man, so they did a good job with forcing us out and making us play around the perimeter, going to the basket and going inside out like we normally do.”
