Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie
Opening Statement:
“I'm just really happy, except for the first four minutes or so, it was a good 36 minutes for us to play together as a team, find each other and really pressure on defense. That stat of 41 points off turnovers, that's a good stat. That means everyone is hustling, playing off each other, deflecting the ball. As far as Leonna [Odom] goes, she is so capable and can do so many things. I'm proud of her for her double-double and her aggression. She is just getting better and better. She has seen everything at this point and is settling in and doing great things. Of course, with Lexie [Brown] being so aggressive offensively and attacking. I liked that play at the end of the first half where she just took off like a bullet. She has that speed and ball handling ability, so it is always great to see that. The 17 assists is good, we would have liked to have over 20 but we are getting better and it's been a busy weekend for us so we are going to rest tomorrow.”
On team effort:
“I think deflections and steals and hustle plays make a team go and when it is shared across the board like anything else, they can feed off each other. We have some great quickness and we had fun playing with a smaller lineup at one point with four guards and also a bigger lineup with three posts. Having steals and controlling the game is important and makes it a lot better defensively.”
On learning from Notre Dame:
“I think we just felt like we underachieved at Notre Dame. I don't know what else to say about that. We did not do all that we wanted. I do think that we played hard and hustled, but we didn't accomplish what we wanted to in terms of ball control particularly in the second half. That stings, especially when it was basically a two-point game. We had a flagrant foul call as you know so it was basically a two-point game. That was very frustrating for us, we didn't like it. That's gone, that's in the past now. You definitely can build off of that and I think that's what we are trying to do. We are trying to take from that and really put together a continuity about how we play with ball control. We had the ball a lot today. We were able to control and make passes so that's the nature of things right now. We're heading into February so I think we need to cut loose a little more offensively in terms of how we attack the basket. That's sort of the next thing for us in transition. There were a couple takes where we pulled the ball back to control the ball and have it but I think now we have to find that balance. We have folks that can get to the basket.”
On Kendall Cooper's play:
“I don't know if there is a particular challenge. We've challenged our entire team to max out what we can do. It's like getting all parts running so we've talked to the post players and the guards. We've talked about rebounding and all sorts of things so I think it's just that mode. I think Kendall kind of took it personally. She knows and we know that she can do a great deal, she is very talented. On the front side of that we have to remind her how talented she is, but you have to put it to use. You have to make it work. I was so excited about Kendall today because of not getting in foul trouble, controlling herself defensively, having some blocks and steals. That was the best defensive positioning she has shown all year. If she can continue to stay in that mode, she can score points. The points will follow that. She took a big step for herself and for the team today.”
Junior Guard Lexie Brown
On her steal and basket to end the first half:
“Like Coach P. always preaches, it starts on the defensive end. We set defensive goals for a score that we don't want them to get over. Our goal today was 50, so we wanted to keep them to at least under 25 at the half. We had to just ramp up the defensive energy, and defense always leads to offense, so I think that's how our offense started to get going.”
On what the team took from the loss against Notre Dame Thursday night and sought to improve upon today:
“We just said that we were missing the little things at Notre Dame. I felt like we played them in a very tough way. We had them on their heels for a little bit of that game, but then we just started slipping up on the little things like hustle plays, not talking on defense, not getting our rotations down, and going too fast on offense. We watched a lot of film on that game, really came together as a team, and discussed that the little things are so important, and I think we executed doing all of the little things today.”
Freshman Forward Leaonna Odom
On her six offensive rebounds:
“Basically it was just watching the ball and deciding to go get it. Everyone can go get them. It just matters if you put the effort into going and getting them. I'm figuring out that I'm capable of getting more rebounds than I have been in the past.”
Wake Forest Head Coach Jen Hoover:
Opening Statement:
“I am proud of our kids, we have faced nothing but adversity all year long, and losing Amber Campbell 17 minutes into the game, just chalk it up to some more adversity. We never stopped playing, and we didn't play our best tonight, and give Duke credit for that, they're long, they're athletic and they caused that. We have to regroup and not let it define us and we never have with this team. We have never felt sorry for ourselves when we have gotten injured or had injuries occur. We just have to bounce back.”
On Amber Campbell's injury:
“It is a foot but at this point I have no idea, I was just told that she couldn't go again. So it is one of those where we kind of go in every day and hope it doesn't happen and today it does. I don't think we will probably know until she gets evaluated later this week.”
On Ariel Stephenson:
“Ariel is such a tough kid she plays all out, she plays all out she throws her body all over the place and I think she was hurting. I was just trying to get her out with a minute to go anyway because I was afraid I was like the one kid that could do something is going to be hurt because she is that competitive too. I hope she is all right too. I didn't really get any preliminary and it doesn't look like she even saw the trainer really when it was all said and done. So I think hers are just aches and pains and the feeling that comes of playing 39 minutes against a team like that.”
