Goodchild, Australia Win Bronze in India

INDIA — Duke University women's basketball freshman Miela Goodchild guided Australia to the bronze medal of the FIBA Under-18 Asian Championship Saturday in India with a 75-58 victory over Korea.
Goodchild, who is from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, tallied a game-high 21 points to go along with nine rebounds to exact revenge on Korea, who knocked off Australia, 63-62, to conclude the group phase on Wednesday.
Australia opened the contest with a four point first quarter lead, 12-8, but Korea came back out outscore the Gems, 20-16, in the second quarter and the game was tied, 28-28, at halftime. Goodchild helped spark Australia in the third period scoring five straight points as the Gems would hold a 54-49 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Goodchild drained a three-pointer in the fourth quarter to help spark Australia on a 20-3 run and would outscore Korea, 21-9, in the fourth and won the bronze with a 75-58 decision. For the game, Australia held an impressive, 30-7, edge in offensive rebounds.
Seeing action in 30 minutes, Goodchild added four steals, one assist and hit 2-of-6 three-pointers.
With Australia advancing to the semifinals in the Asian Championship, the Gems qualified for the 2019 Under-19 World Cup, which will be held in Thailand from July 20-28.
